I've been planning to sell my 1996 328IS because it has so much stuff wrong with it and it seems like every weekend I'm working on it or taking it to the mechanic. But after driving that E46 I think I've decided to keep my E36... It just wasn't as much fun to drive.
Whereas my 1996 328is feels like a sports car (strangely close to the NA Miata and the 240sx I've had), the 2001 330ci felt more like a luxury car. It actually drove pretty close to a rental Mazda 3 I had a couple years ago. You can just barely tell that it's RWD. The shifter was nicer though, short throws and it snaps into gear. But the clutch travel was way too short, virtually like a toggle switch.
So while it's safer, more comfortable, quieter, cheap for what it is ($7500) and probably more attractive to the ladies, I don't think an E46 or newer BMW is for me.
Hellrot is probably too bright too-- Would look good on a Ferrari but I'm not sure it works for a German car. It just amplifies the douchebag vibe of the car.
