i switched to gnome

i've been using various linux distributions for the past 12 years. since the beginning i've been a minimalist using afterstep, windowmaker, enlightenment, etc. eventually i started using xfce. now that i have a mini-notebokk, i installed ubuntu - the gui is pretty snazzy. so now i've decided to install gnome on my main computer. does that make me a bad person?

No, you would be a bad person if you were using something that you didn't like.. well not sure if bad is the right word but perhaps stupid? 😛

Who cares what software someone chooses to run.. it's personal preference...

I tried getting into the full gnome desktop and just couldn't do it. The way I have my E16 desktops setup is just too engrained in my head.

I hardly ever use KDE. Most distros that i've used use gnome and I never really been bothered to do whatever it is I'd have to do to change it. Happy with Gnome, though I rarely even use a GUI.

I've recently switched from gnome to KDE, I really like 4.2. For some reason I really like the eye candy, even though my screen is filled with just a bunch of terminal windows...

I use gnome on a workstation, and I think it would take up too much room on my eee.

i have the 1000h and use gnome with cairo dock and im happy enough. docks/panels auto hide. which eee do you have?

I've been using both with different flavors of linux, and dont really have a preference. I have 2 cars, switching between gnome and kde is just like driving one car one day and the other car then next.

so i figured out that what i really wanted was ubuntu's human theme without actually having to install ubuntu or gnome. xfce4 with the human theme is good enough for me.

701. 7" screen or whatever. It's a bit cramped, even without any bars taking up room.

Actually I've been using cwm on my powerbook also. Want to try ScrotWM, but haven't found the motivation.

that read way too much like scrotum

I can't get away from Gnome, even thought I want to. KDE is the complete suck. I like XFCE and really like LXDE, but those little features in Gnome keep me hooked.

i never liked kde 3.5, the 4 series has some nice features but last i tried was, iirc, 4.1. some of the defaults were...weird, i remember playing with it a lot to get comfortable with it, but at the time dolphin was amazingly unstable for me, and it bugged me to no end.

i think its at 4.2 or something now isnt it? i should try it again soon, but really im happy overall with gnome/compiz/cairo-dock

I'm running a full gnome desktop on my 10" Eee PC - Linux Mint 7 "Gloria" and...

After spending a week scaling everything down to the proper size, dumping Compiz, disabling the animated thumbnails, etc. etc. etc. it's glorious! 😀

I've tried several distros on the Eee PC (1000HD) and they all suffered from a common problem - the display flickered during network activity. This was driving me crazy! The fix turned out to be installing madwifi drivers...

Anyway, gnome is all I run these days, sooo... I guess I'm a bad boy!

Gnome is sort of an American thing, so maybe we're all badazz...

EDIT

Here's a snappy, if you're interested...

I've been using gnome now for a long while .... but I can't consider myself a bad boy 😀 though when it comes to eyecandy I'd love to use KDE and when it comes to reliability I prefer a lighter DE like xcfe but who knows why do I usr Gome ? ?😀

That menu bar at the top would drive me nuts. 😛

I find XFCE offers a good percentage of Gnomes features with a smaller footprint. The one thing it could use is Desktop Icons (which it doesn't have if I'm remembering correctly). I know I could get another program for icons... but it's one more thing for me to look for and install.

I used to h-a-t-e having the menu bar at the top, but...

I actually do this with Windows machines now - no kidding!

If I was on one right now, I'd show you...

Anyway, one of the reasons I did this on the netty (personal preferences aside) is because the display is rather cramped, and surfing the web with bars on the top and bottom uses up a lot of valuable real estate. Sooo... I put them all above the action... Kapeesh?

To be honest, XFCE has been getting bloated, especially the way it's included in Xubuntu. I don't see much reason not to use Ubuntu, they had basically equal memory usage. That's right Xubuntu, you kind of suck, but I still use you on my mom's PC just because you've been there forever, and you cut out the bloat before ubuntu did. Too bad Puppy Linux and DSL show how a stripped down distribution can be done right. Xubuntu still needs 512MB of ram and a butt load of hd space to run well, those things fit on tiny flash drives run fine in 128MB of ram. I think DSL can go even lower than that.

If you want sin, I just switched to KDE. It's flashy, seems to run smoother in gnome (I suspect more thoroughly multithreaded), and I love the plasma desktop applets. I played around with KDE for windows just a little bit (wasn't very good, not near ready), then went to try ubuntu 9.04, it finally detects my wireless but can't establish a connection. And right now I'm installing a Kubuntu virtual machine, since I really detest using Vista. It's sluggish, and often requires a reboot to fix it up, so I figure if I just do all my desktop usage in a VM, I can strip down what boots up with windows and just use it for games.

I do prefer gnome's default layout over KDE's, the menu layout is smarter than KDE's fancy windows look. But gnome is ugly (or at best decent) and doesn't perform as smoothly. An I/O heavy process freezes up the entire gnome desktop, while somehow KDE keeps going.

To all you people with netbooks, have you tried the Ubuntu Netbook Edition? I've heard good things about it from those who have.

I actually do this with Windows machines now - no kidding!

Me too, it actually seems like the smarter place to have it since it doesn't interfere with the apps that way.
But the dual menu bars of ubuntu are a waste of space unless you're really limited in horizontal resolution.

10" is gloriously huge compared to my eee701. No menu bars necessary for me. None. Evar. On that machine anyways. 😛

I hear ya!

IMHO, 12" is the perfect size display for portables...

I still have four Compaq Portables (original PC clone). They have built-in 9" green screen monitors.

LoL! I used to hook them up to a "gloriously huge" external 13" CGA monitor (when I was home).

My hat is off to you, sir!

I used Compaq Portables for years - didn't think a thing about the display size, but...

I don't know if I could handle a 7" Eee PC - Gnome (hacked, mod'ed & scaled) or not! 😀
