I sure picked a good weekend to go to the DMZ in Korea.

Pooooouyaaaaa.

Looks like things have been going well for ya; good stuff. I actually have a friend over there doing the same thing as you, although I think she's in Seoul. She's heading out in December, though, so dunno if I'll have a chance to head out and visit.

Then again, another friend decided to fly over as an English teacher this past summer, so she should be around for at least another year. Maybe I'll visit after all.

Somehow, when reading that, the first thing I thought of was having to explain to my future grandchildren that WWIII was started by a Marine popping a potential enemy soldier in the head with a rock. For fun.

The end result was the deaths of 1.7 billion people...

...so thats why you shouldn't throw rocks kids. ;)

DMZ area is a surreal place.

My wife and I went there a couple of months ago. I will link a few pics of my trip in this thread as well when I get a chance later on.

I felt the same way, how the place is so quiet and serene....I recall my wife mentioned like "the calm before a storm."

Thinking of her statement just makes it more creepy considering the two countries are actually still at war without any peace treaties after 1953. But then again, I don't necessarily see ROK respecting any treaties of any kind.

I'd be tossing water balloons.

Using slingshots.

Large slingshots.

1.7 billion people would not die, just a lot of North Koreans, which doesnt matter anyways.

My entire unit and a shitload of other Marines were in Korea, not all the communists in hell could overrun us. ;)

You'll be happy to know that communists are also atheists, and thus do not have a hell:p

I was quoting Chesty Puller (one of the greatest American's to ever live) -

"Don't forget that you're First Marines! Not all the Communists in hell can overrun you!"
- Chesty Puller motivating his men at Chosin Reservoir

excellent

btw the Breaking the rules pictures were very interesting. Funny how one side was green with forests and vegetation and the other side was barren and stark. Was this separation concurrent with the border between NK and SK?

First of all, thanks again for the kind words!

Bunker - Thanks for reading the Israel story. I have to say, that might be the single greatest adventure I've ever been a part of. I know it will be hard to top! I'm flattered that you read the whole thing :)

chambersc - Yep, like I was joking...good timing. Now on CNN World I see all the places I just went to over and over again.

Whisper - Danny!!!! good man, come to Korea! How is school treating you? Are you as good a person as ever? ;)

jagec - The reason the ROK soldiers ALWAYS have their fists clenched is two fold, form what I understand. First, is to look intimidating, much like their Chips-like Aviator glasses. The other reason I think has something to do with their 'modified taekwondo' training. I really don't know except that they are ready to strike at all times.

JSFLY - The soldier at Dora observatory actually address your question. The reason the northern side is so devoid of vegetation is because the the North forced their civilians to chop ton all the trees because they needed it because they are starved for energy.

Please feel free to ask any more questions!

Heh. It can be if you're dumb enough to leave an unpatched Windows box in it :)

You know, speaking of that, I always wondered why there was a DMZ on a router...

Thank you for sharing, I love any chance to read and look up pictures from those who visit the DMZ.

I have 2 friends that were stationed in Korea DMZ ( they called it "Dead Man Zone") a couple of years ago right before the former North Korea President death. From what they told me they didn't think they were going home alive.

Somewhere out on the Net is a webpage with a ton of pictures of someone who managed to go to Pyongyang. I was dying to go there after I read it.
