Hello,

So I'm an English teacher here in South Korea (Busan specifically) and we just had a big vacation. On the second part of the trip I went to Seoul and went on a USO tour of the DMZ. That was last Saturday, the same day 5 North Korean soldiers crossed into the DMZ and the South responded with 40 warning shots. The next day North Korea went nuclear. That Sunday I was lucky enough to get treated to a really nice hotel room in the financial district of downtown Seoul. It was kind of eery to think of what the place would like if the North really turned it into a "Sea of Fire."

Anyway, I wrote about it my blog, a quick summary with a cool set of pictures. Check it out and let me know what you think:

My wife and my family were in Seoul a couple of months ago. Didn't get to go to the DMZ, but we had a good time shopping!

Not to mention that it would make the following West German recession look like nothing in comparison.

There is a Korean movie called JSA (Join Security Area), it's pretty good, you should check it out.

I wish the US would seal relations with China and fix any issues we have with them. I think the real problem is that China doesn't want the US forces in South Korea to pose any threat to their borders, so they continue to support North Korea. The US is only using South Korea as a military outpost because it was setup to watch Japan and communist China...I don't believe anyone quite fears communism as much as they did when it was on the rise. I would like to see the US and China come together and squash the powers of NK and free its people to help its economy. That country is so poor they could really benefit from the Asian Industrialists that are adding value to the region.

I remember seeing something about the N. Korean/S. Korean line on the discovery channel I think. I don't remember everything but I remember them saying something about one person half way out and the other standing right beside the other. This pic is what I'm talking about. For some reason though I thought it was U.S. Marines that watched the border.

Thanks for the kind words.

As for the badge, to be honest I don't really remember what it stood for...United Nations something. I wanted to swipe it but we gave it back as we got off the bus the final time.

TecHNooB - My mom's did as well ;)

Josh - I'm not exactly sure which pic you are referring to as the link you provided doesn't work. I think you are talking about the actual demarcation line? If so, we saw only U.S. Army and ROK soldiers. I don't think the Marines are there.

Yes and no. I've been to Bethlehem and various checkpoints in Israel a couple years ago and that felt more intense. You can read about that entire trip here:

Israel

The DMZ is a bit different. It's like an insanely premeditated quite tension, if that makes any sense. It's a massive place, and you get the feeling if that something were to happen, it would be really big and really bad.

It's just that until the other day, nothing seemed like it was going to happen. hopefully I nor you get nuked any time soon!

Buddy of mine was stationed on the DMZ. He told me so many stories of they/us taking pot shots at one another, blaring loud ass tunes at each other, making rude gestures, snaeking across the DMZ to check sh!t out (he was a sniper), just all sorts of things. Cool stories to hear.

We need to nuke them and be done with it.

I did a 30 day deployment from Okinawa to the DMZ myself. Pretty much the same stuff happened when I was there, though I was no sniper, and did not go into the DMZ at all.

A corporal in my company did bean a North Korean soldier in the back of the head with a rock though.
