well.. then.. why you sittin' there fussing? why don't you just go do it? go to empty parking lot (highschool oughta be good this time of year), practice backing up, double check your parallel parking skills, and go do it? hell.. I'm 47 and I suck at backing up too.. I just don't put myself in a position where I'm gonna need to do much of that. I can back out of my driveway, and I can back out of a parking space, but if I couldn't, I could park in front of my house and I could make sure I put my car in a spot I could pull all the way through.. I ::hate:: making left turns across traffic without a left signal (was a traumatic incident many years ago involving a tractor-trailer truck), but I don't mind goin' a few blocks out of my way to avoid doing that..
the boyfriend.. he just does not want to drive.. he'd rather wait around for someone to take him places.. the places it's important he get to, he knows someone will make sure he does.. the places he just might like to go, he seems to be content to not go there if nobody wants to take him.. and he lives close enough to walk over when my daughter is too pissy to go fetch him.. he even has a car that'll be his once he gets his license, he just really doesn't want to drive. have an uncle, he's.. lets see.. my mom is 77.. so.. he's.. at least 81, maybe 82.. has never had a drivers license.. all his sisters (there were 4 girls and him, he's the middle kid), both his wives, all his kids, they all drove.. he never has. never has wanted to. my 16yo finished drivers ed in january and where we live, could have gotten his license soon as he had that piece of paper, 'cept for a shortage of with a parent road hours, and he hasn't driven since.. did renew hs permit last month, sooner or later folks will get tired of driving him places I'm not willing to take him and he'll decide it's worth the effort to get the license, maybe.. I waited an extra year too, when it was my turn.. eh..
when you want to drive bad enough, you will. til then.. what you complainin' about?
Exactly. If you can't pass the test the first time then you should not be driving ever.
Unfortunately, stupidity doesn't count any points against you, so you can retake
the test as many times as you want and eventually you will get lucky. I pity the
drivers that have to share the road with you the days after you get lucky.

I thoroughly disagree. I was just too nervous when I took the test the first time. I'm as cool as a cucumber when I'm out on the road now. I notice everything because of my ADD, and I'm able to take it all in and make lightning quick decisions. I can hyperfocus while driving, never getting bored because there's just so much data to take in.
Nervousness crippled me because it prepared my brain for "fight-or-flight." Under such adrenaline, your body is more likely to make jerky motions rather than smooth, controlled motions. Such slow control is useless when you're fleeing from a bear or fighting a street punk, but it's absolutely necessary when you're driving.
One shouldn't have the attitude of "if I can do it anybody can do it." You don't realize how other people work.
Edit: Did I mention that I was driving an unfamiliar vehicle during my first test? Should that disqualify me from trying again with the car I'll actually be driving?

How could you not back up? Seriously? Grab that lever thingamadoo, put it in the "R" gear, whatever that stands for, remove foot from brake, put foot on gas. Look behind you. Steer BACKWARDS.
I know the problem. Youre 17 years old, 60lbs overweight, so you cant look behind you when you back up.
I dont want you driving near me anyways.

Driving is one of the most stressful things ever, but it doesn't make me nervous, just angry. Honestly. Today when picking up my bro about 30 mins from boston, trying to beat rush-hour thatd make my trip home 1:15 instead of 40 minutes, i have to slam on my breaks when going 75 and decellerate to 45 in the LEFT LANE. WHY? *GASP* somebody got pulled over in the right lane like 5 minutes earlier. How could i miss that?

I think driving tests should be much more difficult. There are SO MANY people on the road who cannot drive for sh!t, especially here in Southern California. I've seen some things out on the roads here that are truly, truly unbelievable. Some people just should not be behind the wheel, no matter what their age.
Where do you live, by the way? And at what times will you be on the road on average? I'm going to be parked somewhere safe when you are on the road!

I just got mine a month and a half ago. I'm almost 22. It was never necessary. For as often as I asked for rides, my friends really didn't mind. I'm happy it turned out the way it did; I don't think I had the right mindset at 16 or even 18 for that matter
wow I'm suprised there are so many people who didn't get their license. I got mine 5 days before I turned 16, and its been downhill ever since 😛 I hated asking people for rides, and my parents always complained about giving me rides everywhere. Heh, usually I'm the one who ends up driving at college, because I have the biggest car. Good thing I like to drive.

Hey! i didnt get my licence untill i was 18....took me two times to get it...but i got it...its not the end of the world

What you need to do is grab yourself a 40, drink it down. Go out on the highway, turn off your lights, let go of the stearing wheel and close your eyes! MAN it will flip you OUT!

I would suggest taking the driving test in my old hometown. The test consisted of driving about 2 miles down the road, turning around, and driving back to the DMV. 😕
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that driving home from the DMV immediately after the test I almost had an accident (would not have been my fault, however).
I've been driving since I was 14, it just takes a little time to build up some confidence in yourself and get the feel for the car you are driving, don't worry about it too much, and these assholes who say they are better than you just like to get their jollies off of making a kid feel bad, don't worry about them, they will get hit by a semi someday and the world will be a better place because of it.

I have been driving since i was 6 or 7. I did not take the test till was 18. 🙂

I disagree. I failed my first test and I'm a great driver.
I pulled up to the testing station as some dark, nasty clouds rolled in. By the time I was through the line and going out for my driving test it was pouring. I couldn't see three feet in front of me. I asked the tester if I could wait for the rain to let up. "No, get in the car."
It was like driving at night with your lights off. Needless to say I grazed a curb pulling out of the parking lot. Automatic failure. Big surprise.
I went to a different testing station the next day and walked out with my shiny new drivers license.
