I suck: What credit monitoring service should I get?

I need one for piece of mind (especially after somebody tried to open two CCs with my SSN 3 months back). I've used up the free ones with both equifax and experience in the past.

So I have Experian: $80/year and I like their service.
Equifax: $5/month for the silver, but that's no good because I'll have to pay $7.50 for each report, so really I have $10/month for gold but damn that's a lot for credit monitoring
Transunion: $10.95 quarter ($44/year) with 4 free credit reports/year

I'm leaning transunion but does anybody here have it? What sort of info do you get in your email updates every 7 days...?

Also IMPORTANT QUESTION: I realize that many lenders check only one bureau at a time when opening a new account (American express checks equifax for instance), but is it true that when you have an account it will post to ALL THREE bureaus, so in fact monitoring of only one will let you see if some piece of filth opens up a new account for you?

These are all a rip off but might be worth it in your case (because of the attempted fraud/identity theft).

I wouldn't pay more than $70/yr for a credit monitoring service.

I'd probably go with one a major credit bureau or credit card company offers.

Instead of paying a fee, can't you have the credit bureaus put a fraud alert on your record? You can tell them to include a statement on your file that says creditors should contact you directly for permission before opening new accounts.

It's on there but expires after 90 days unless I put a long term one on and I really prefer a more hands on approach (in addition to that of course).

I'll have to call MBNA and see the crap they used to nag me for and what they have now.
