I suck. I am a religious zealot and racist!

Ok, here I am just finishing watching the Panthers cream the Jets on CBS and left it on that channel to watch something interesting on 60 minutes. First story about E.L.F. sucked and pissed me off, so I almost turned off the TV. The next one was about some paramedics from NY who were helping in the Pakistan earthquake. I thought to myself, "bah, nuthin but terrorists and Islamic crazies over there, who cares if they live or die. I mean, what have they done for me? They've done nothing but crash airliners into our buildings and burn our flags. Screw them!"

As I continued to watch, I noticed the amount of death and destruction over there. They have nothing. But what was worse was no one was helping them except these 13 paramedics from NY. No one else. I saw a girl who's hand was crushed and getting gangrene. The choppers sent in wouldn't land to help her. I saw a little boy who's father walked 5 hours down the mountain to take him to these Americans. The father's wife died of a heartattack after she witnessed the quake leveling her house and 10 of her family members in it. The man had nothing left except his emanciated son, who could barely open his eyes.

At this point I was starting to tear up. Who am I to judge these people? One of the docters recounted an event that took place between him and an older Pakastani man. The Pakastani pointed to his hands and fingers and arms and then to the docters...meaning we're both HUMAN. No matter our religious, economic, ideologic differences, deep down we're all the same on the inside and there's something about that which connects us to each other. A simple act of generosity...can make the difference.

Why am I so caught up in the acts of a couple other religious zealots that I detach myself from my fellow man? These people deserve just as much help as the people in New Orleans or in the asian tsunami. Why do I think that because these people follow Islam that they are unworthy of my help and compassion? What have I become?

Cliffs:
1. Amigaman is a racist and religious zealot pig-dog but doesn't know it.
2. Amigaman watches a 60 minutes story about the Pakastani earthquake and the 13 paramedics/heroes from NY who came to help by themselves.
3. Amigaman is disgusted with himself.
4. Amigaman has a really quick revelation.
5. Amigaman says to ATOT..."Don't become Amigaman. Help those who can't help themselves and become a better human in the process."

As a sidenote, I'm going to start a $50 monthly donation to Doctors Without Borders. Although I do other charitable contributions, this is the first to an organization that is not religious based and only exists to help other people. It's not much, but it's a start. Do what you can, please.

You sir.
Should go and help.
Instead of paying $50.

Inappropriate answer. I should ban you just for being an idiot, but I think, for now, I will leave you here for all to point at and laugh.

Actually, it sounds to me like you've overcome the propaganda brainwashing that the USA does to it's citizens and realized that people are people.

:music:
What if you woke up in the middle of the night?
And in your bare feet you walked outside
And realizing that you were awake that you could fly
Out over the world
To places that you've only heard of
See faces that you were sold as murderers
But just like you they're only lonely boys and girls
Like all over the world
What if you could lift them up?
What if you could make it so that times weren't tough?
So every morning when the world woke up
There'd only be weather on the news
And what if you were back in bed
With one of them floating over your head
What do you say to your enemies
When you don't know what it is that could have been between you?
There ain't no blue skies over bad lands
Even if it ain't raining in the mornings
But you don't need to fly to understand it
Just understand understanding.

Good for you! People need to get past political and religious bias and realize we're all human beings. Way cool post.

I strongly disagree with this song's lyics, but it's appropriate:

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

I've seriously thought about going to help...but it's a tough decision. I have some friends who got married recently and went and joined the Peace Corps. The story they told on why they joined got me very tempted to do the same. But I have a life here and my family and I do pretty well. I figure some people are gifted to help others and some are gifted to make money to help those who help others. I fall in the latter category.

Besides, what good would I, an overrweight 30-something computer programmer, do for the Peace Corps or Doctors Without Borders? Show them how to make a webpage? Configure Weblogic for them?

 op... I think your post illustrates something many of us go through (or have yet to go through as the case may be)

:disgust: right...

What it comes down to is that we help our own before we help other people, although It'd be great if we could help everyone, that simply isn't possible, although the earthquake should be getting way more US aid than it is.
