I suck at halo3 multiplayer.

I hate to start another thread. But I just can't seem to kill anybody. I know I'm hitting them and my aim is pretty decent and everytime I go in to melee I get beat. I get killed in 1-2 seconds everytime I engage somebody.

Hate to be a lamo, but it's getting frustrating. Maybe I just don't understand how to kill somebody in halo.

start here http://halowiki.net/p/Main_Page

there are some pretty good pages, "Advanced Positioning and Tactics" is a good one.

the main thing is practice i think, and learning what is the best approach to a given situation. whether it be weapon, melee or grenade, or a combination of them.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I think I made some kind of haiku...

It just takes practice. Playing against other people that are a lot better is the best way to learn. I never play Halo but when I do, I suck at first too, but after a little while i get good enough to give my friends a challenge.

I've noticed it plays different than most shooters...your main gun is basically useless at any sort of ranged distance, and grenades won't kill in one hit (unless it's a stickied sticky)...they're meant to either bring down shields or kill those that have a bit of damage on them already. I'm used to one-hit-kill grenades and a starting weapon (or easy to get machine gun) that has decent power and a decent range. Halo 3 isn't really like that...and that's where I mostly suck with the game.

Other than that...just play more. Learn the "tactics" of the game....learn how to play smart.

Thanks guys...I guess I just don't really understand the tactics. If you want somebody to beat up on my tag is

I just can't seem to finish the kill and I don't think I really know how to. I would like to join the Thursday night custom games in an effort to learn.

The assault rifle isn't great at a distance, but it's great at short-medium range which is where a lot of the action happens in Halo. I bet if you looked at a bunch of players on Bungie.net, most people would have the most kills with melee and assault rifle. Number 3 varies depending on the preference of the player - shotguns and battle rifle are popular, I think my third is the ghost now. 😱

Spidey - first of all, are you playing team games? I think team games are best for someone like you, because you won't have to deal with as many one-on-one situations if you stick with one or more of your teammates.

A lot of times when you get killed while you're going in for a melee, it's not because the other guy meleed you, it's because he had a shotgun. Lots of shotgun whores in Halo. I'm not a fan of the weapon myself, the weapon switching takes too long for me to effectively use it against someone who is good (because it is all but useless at anything but very close range). One trick you can try is running toward a guy who is running toward you, then when you're nearly close enough for a melee, start backing up. One of my complaints about Halo is that you can run backward as fast as you can run foward, but you can use that to your advantage - it'll keep you out of melee range, and while he's meleeing he can't shoot. You just keep shooting and finish him off. It might take you a few tries to get the distance down.

If you see a needler, PICK IT UP. It is a very powerful weapon in Halo 3, its homing projectiles make it a great weapon at medium range.

Don't try to throw sticky grenades too much. The time you waste trying to stick a guy will give him time to kill you before you can kill him. Unless you get the stick, you're basically dead.

If you're having trouble at close range, the battle rifle is a GREAT weapon at medium/long range.

Don't be afraid to retreat. So many times I run into a situation that is certain death, and I always smack my forehead afterwards.

And of course, the more you play the better you will get. Probably.

I see almost all of your games are social team slayer. Try ranked matches. It'll put you with people at your skill level.

I also see you've never killed anyone with the needler. It may be pink and pretty gay looking, but it's a pretty great weapon. I can't describe the anger I feel when I see those pink things flying at me, because unless you're close enough to someplace where you can take cover it's a pretty quick death.

In social playlists you have 34 deaths to melees and 17 deaths to the shotgun - so you probably are trying to melee guys with the shotgun a lot of times.

Mugs,

Thanks for the guidance. If I knew how to play ranked matches I would. But my dumbass doesn't even comprehend the difference.

It's only frustrating because I normally can carry my weight in FPS, but I'm getting killed fast.

Don't come into a battle of wits with no ammunition.
😉

Seriously, I can't seem to finish people in this game. You guys are more than welcome to come open a can of whoopass on me. Maybe I'll learn something.

Halo 1 and 3 are all about Grenade-Gun-Melee pretty much in any order, some more typical than others.

You should practice always aiming for the head, adjusting sensitivity, and i recommend setting toggle crouch on (instead of holding in the stick to crouch).

In terms of my weapons with the most kills, I'm 1) AR 2) Melee 3) Plasma Grenade 4) Ghost
I'm pretty good hitting people with my sticky.

You should join us tonight when we play custom games. Odds are we'll be a little more friendly than other people on Live and I'd imagine a few kind souls will talk you through whatever you need help with. My first time playing with everyone was last week and it was a lot of fun.

Also, I'd recommend you watch some saved films and see how people move when they're fighting. You can learn a lot from watching the better people play.

Halo 3 is like the Curse of Monkey Island games. The one with the better insults/comebacks wins.

how late do you guys usually play until? my kids have a ridiculously late bedtime during which i usually fall asleep so i probably wouldn't be able to get on until 1 am. if anyone were still playing at that time would i be able to join?

Definitely come play with us tonight. i'm trying to be on between 9:00-9:30 and most everyone else should be on around 10:00 to start playing. It's a hell of a lot of fun...

This is a good thread.... Thanks spidey for getting the discussion going.

I played some lone wolves on live earlier this week and i was terrible at it. made me sad.... b/c i was pretty decent at halo 2 on liv e. of course, always prefered getting friends over to a house andn doing some 4v4, or more.

I wish i could join the weekly thursday night game, but alas, i'm away from my 360 this week for work.

I'd avoid toggle crouch just because you can't crouch jump to get on higher ledges.

Can I get in on some of these thursday customs? Thursday is one of the night I have available to play as the wife is hooked to the other Tv and Grey's anatomy that night. Live GT is Random Betrayal. I am always looking to get into games with someone other then a foul mouthed 15 year old!!

As for Spidey, there is a wealth of how too articles at 2old2play.com in the halo forum. One main thread has I think an 8 or 9 part walk thru on basics and strategy, map walk thrus as well as weapon usage, jumps and scenarios that will really get you up to speed on a few key aspects of the game. I highly recommend it as many of those people on the site helped me improve a ton when I started online with Halo 2.
