I suck at CS

I realized I've been playing CS for like 2 or 3 years now but i'm still not too good at it. Probably an average CS player, but i started out as an average CS player, so i haven't gotten much better at all in the past couple years. I always stick to playing games i'm not good at for some reason. Anyways, I was thinking maybe fiddling around with my config could help me out a bit, anyone know some settings (commands) that i could put in my config that would help me out?

I started out playing regular CS, which i was better at, but now i'm playing source, making use of my high-end computer system. A while ago I had to format reinstall both so i lost my old configs, seem to be playing CS:S more often now though, so i need to build my config again.

One of the main problems i have with CS/Source is vision/mental processing. I can't see who the hell i'm shooting at most of the time, and always end up dead while i'm trying to process in my mind whether or not the person in front of me is a friend of foe (i try and stay away from FF servers but they're all over the place). I've recognized the different characters on each team (Terrorists/Counter) but it still takes a while to get through my head whether or not i should shoot at a different person. Especially if the person is far away, then i can never tell, but other people can always tell if i'm on their team or not, so i must be missing something. If there was a way to highlight enemies in red and the rest of my team in blue that would help a crapload. Have a feeling nothing like that is possible though.

I do remember in the original CS you could make it so all terrorist were those guys with the green shirt and all the CTs were like commandos with bulletproof vests on, can you still make it like that in CS:S?

So my main problem is not being able to recognize friends and foes. Another problem i have is aiming. I don't know why, i just have bad aim in CS, i usually just spray and pray, i've gotten pretty good at spraying, shooting in bursts is pretty inaccurate anyways, especially with the horrible hitboxes CSS has. It seems like bullets never go where i'm aiming and i just have to hope to get lucky. Maybe i need a better mouse? Using the MX510 now. Aiming just seems really hard with this thing.

Another thing is I often get shot through objects (walls/boxes/doors), but when i try and shoot other players through stuff like that it never works.

BTW, why does Steam suck so bad? It won't remember any servers i put in my favorites list (hasn't for a long time now), the friends list hasn't worked for like a year 1/2, and you still can't mute other players in the game like you used to be able to. Doesn't seem like they work on their game browser stuff at all. I'm tired of sorting through all the servers with Bots only on them too, they say they added a bot filter, but it doesn't work unsurprisingly.

But i guess this thread is about me sucking at CS and not Steam sucking in general.

Shiz, i always make threads too big when typing in the middle of the night, oh well, maybe someone will read it 😛

sure, most hacks/cheats will do that, or you could possibly replace the player models (dont know if thats possible in Source - legitimately?) Either way, its not really very fair now and could get you banned. I guess you've tried turning the brightness up / running at a lower resolution?

You havent mentioned using any 1337 5p34k or having a name like 'y0 m4MM4'

This is obviously fundemental and thus you have no chance.

Start by these two basics and then move onto the skill of 'absolutely always bitching and moaning at everyone in-game and especially those that kill you'

Once you have progressed to the stage where you have become a complete and utter arsehole who isnt even liked by their mother.... then grasshopper you are a true CS player

it's very very hard to improve at CS if you haven't been improving for the past three years.

As for Steam... my Favorites for servers DOES work, someone posted a fix on a server's forum one day...
and the friend's list does work. i use it.
they don't have a bot filter, but there's an option to see if a server has bots - that works just as well.

shooting through objects does do damage, but it does A LOT less than what it would be without going through an obstacle. also, it depends on what gun you have - if you have a submachine gun or a pistol, you'll never be able to shoot through doors or walls (only rifles, p90 to an extent, and the deagle can shoot through walls).

anyway, about your processing problem - go to a deathmatch server, join a team, then go crazy - FF is always off, you get whatever gun you want, and there's no downtime - once you're killed, you respawn instantly, somewhere on the map. It's helped my twitch skills a lot, and it's also helped my recognization skills. here's the IP of the deathmatch server I go to : 63.251.20.64:27015.

I'll look for the Favorites fix if I can find it...

EDIT: here i found a FIX.
Enjoy!

There's DM CS:S servers?!

I so wanted that recently!! I started playing CS back in beta 1 or 2 but not hardcore this whole time like some people, so I'm not that good these days in CS:S. I hate waiting around for the last retard with a desert eagle to get killed. DM with any gun selection would be awesome!

Guess I'll be loading it up after work today to look for some!

there're also WC3 mod servers, so it's like an RPG - you can gain levels and skills by doing different things - buying experience, headshots, knife kills, etc etc.

but yes, DM in CS:S can get insane - you become so full of adrenaline that the moment you see someone you twitch to their face instantly. i love the feeling, it can make playing CS for half an hour feel like i just played for four hours.

there's a command that will make a team all one skin (all CT's have seal skin and all T's have leet krew skin, something like that)

my friends list has NEVER worked, and the server list has been broken for me for at least the past 5mos ... =/

😀 nope, not intense enough. but i do get the HEADSHOT!

seriously, though, theres a lot of adrenaline involved in DM - mostly from the fear of getting killed the second you spawn.

Rules to get a good kill ratio:

Rule # 1:never hide behind doors, boxes, thin walls.

Rule # 2: always shoot at doors, boxes, thin walls.

It's 99% practice. Play a lot and you'll get good, but obviously you'd have to really like the game to play a lot. I've been playing on and off for 5 years or so, and every time after I start playing again after a couple months break, it's terrible, but after a few games (or a lot of games) I'm back up to a good kill ratio. It's like any game, you eventually get the feel for it, get a sense of how people move, where people hide, where you can shoot through walls, and what it sounds like when someone is around you.

Also, your mouse is more than good enough to play well. Play around with mouse sensitivity to see which settings you like, I personally prefer 600 DPI on the mouse and sensitivity 3 in game.

Set your screen resolution high, but still keeping the refresh rate high and frame rate maxed out at 100. Also play with your network setting to see if you can lower your ping or just overall smoothness. It's hard to tell you what to set things at because every connection has different optimal settings, but the ones that matter are (with my cable connection settings in brackets):

cl_cmdrate 70
cl_updaterate 40
rate 22352.329932

I make my rate a non-integer because I heard it works better that way, but I doubt it's really true.

For me the biggest advantage is knowing where people will pop out and how they will behave. I stopped worring about aiming awhile ago (every good CS player can lock on your skull in under a second) and started using human behavior to my advantage (really only works in PUBs)

1)Even though they know better people will camp in obvious spots.
2) People will almost never check doorways ("cutting the pie" from my clan days) before they run in.
3) People almost never use flashbangs, execpt for obvious areas
4) They will never turn around when they are moving
5) they will always try and take the first shot (usually to the head)... aimed or not
6) They will follow the person in front of them

The trick at becoming REALLY good at pubing in CS isnt your aim (as i mentioned before : everyone can aim well), its how well you know the maps and how well you can predict what someone is going to do based up on your current actions and those of a previous round.

ALthough maybe this isn't the right advice for you, CS at the level that i played meant that if i did not play for a week ... i got slaughtered when i came back for the next 3 days. You used all the tools available to you so you could get one more kill.

In the end everyone left for WoW and i followed kicking and screaming as this was the only other game (Street Fighter 2 was the other) that i dominated at.

im sorry i cant really give you much advice if you pause when spotting a teamate/enemy. You should have learned that by now, it should just process in your head the models, i picked that up after like 1 week of playing cs......maybe less. 😀

Yeah I'm just not used to all the different player models yet i think, 95% of the time i've played CS the Ts were just one model and CTs were just one model, i need that command to make all Ts the 1337 crew and make all CTs the seals. That would help out a lot i think. I still can't see anything from far away, it just like shooting at a blurb all the time, maybe time to get my eyes checked 😛

Thanks for the tips and stuff. I'll try that Steam server favorites fix, hope it works. It seems like Steam is always messing up little things like that everywhere.

I'd like to figure out what net speed options i should put in my config, just from doing a speedtest i found on google it says my "Communications are 1.8 megabits per second". What should i put in my config that might help me out speedwise? Not sure what my rate should be exactly, or any of the other net speed commands that CS has (cl_cmdrate - cl_updaterate etc.)

Does anyone else feel like the hitboxes in CS:S are still really bad? It seems like you still have to shoot at where the enemy used to be or where the enemy is going. Basically i'm wondering if the hitboxes are still like this

For the network settings, type "net_graph 1" to get the performance graph to show up in the corner of your screen, and then play with the settings until the green line is as close to a smooth, straight green line as possible. You also have to find a server where you have a good connection because the networking goes both ways. If you're on a server that's far away from you, you'll never get a good connection.

I think the hitboxes are pretty bad too. Sometimes I can think I'm shooting someone's lower body and I get a headshot. The hitboxes in 1.6 are also less exact than previous versions. It used to be much harder to get headshots, if I remember correctly.

hitboxes seem generally fine to me. once in a while lag makes it seem like someone is hacking/hitboxing, and the most common weapons that hit the wrong hitbox are the AK and the m3 shotgun, but I still do alright.

the WoW part...QFT !!11! oneone!!1

not everyone aims well

a thing i finally noticed

when i shoot i just let my hand do the work... my brain does not do anything.

so while your shooting and you see your just shooting away from the target, make a change in your aim really fast... that's how i got good...

I went back to the original CS and i'm better at that, Source is just crap, most pro players will tell you the same.

So I'm better at the original, but still have most of the same problems. I can't lock on to a person fast enough, and i can't see who i'm shooting at from far away (though it's easier to tell in the original since cl_minmodels 1 works, but from a distance all players are just shadows). Just gotta practice more i guess. I don't even like CS to be honest, i've just been bored lately 😛 - Still wouldn't mind being better at it. One thing i do a lot is rush while the rest of the team stays behind and peeks out everyone once in a while. I guess i shouldn't rush so much.

I guess CS has died in popularity a lot since source came out, which is a shame. Hard to find a server with a good amount of players (at least in the middle of the night), was never like that before.
