I still don't get why everyone hates Battlefield Earth.

What is so bad about it? Sure, the dialogue and the acting is lame, and it's got plot holes the size of moutains, but that's not the POINT. It's not SUPPOSED to have those things. It's a SciFi flick. That's what it is, and that's what it will always be. In fact, it's one of the best SciFi flicks ever made. Note that SciFi flicks are not the same thing as 2001 or even Hitchhikers Guide. They are their own catagory. And Battlefield Earth is one of the best of them ever.

You answered your own question......even a science fiction flick should hold some sense of believability somewhere. Or would you completly suspend belief to the point that 200-year-old AV gas is still good or that planes sitting on the ground rotting for a few hundred years can suddenly, without a damned bit of maintenance, become completely airworthy? Or that the teaching helmets had that HARRIER teaching program, a contraption I'm sure that Travola personally programmed their function into the teaching machine.

It didn't have plot holes, it was pointless, had holes the size of the sun, and was a rather worthless adaptation of a pulp fiction novel, which in itself was just barely better than some comics.

Did you read the book? The book was awesome and explained things so much more. The movie was a huge dissapointment.

Uh.. sci fi films are not suppose to have gaping plotholes that make no sense, that just makes it completely ridiculous and boring to watch. This was a terrible film, end of story.

I found the main character annoying and think Travolta was miscast. I'm sure the book was better as far as the story goes, but the film was a lacking in that respect. Sure, it had a plot, but there could have been more substance/complexity to it.

Surprising that you think Travolta was miscast since I think he was a major producer of the film.

Not quite sure what that has to do with him being miscast
I also agree that a different person could have improved the role greatly

this was my contribution in the other thread ...

the WORST part of battlefield was how they would have the aliens talking in some alien language, then it would transition to english and at that time, the humans speaking would then be speaking some jibberish. and then it would transition back.

that was THE WORST IDEA EVER!! :|

Aside from all the other problems that are mentioned above, the plot just wasn't interesting or even marginally believable.

I mentioned it because he chose the role for himself. I myself have never seen the movie nor read the book, but listened to one of Travolta's interview's regarding the movie. He was saying he produced the movie to spread the word of Hubbard and that he was passionate about the role. Like I said, I can't pass judgement on the movie or performances, but thought it was strange someone thought Travolta was miscast. I thought he would have brought his best acting to the role the way he talked about the movie.

I liked BF Earth. I liked Serenity. I liked Aeon Flux. But if there was to be a global ban on one sci fi movie that was produced and needed to be burned it would be Starship Troopers 2. And I'm surprised The Fifth Element made it to the Blu-ray initial title offering. I mean it is a decent movie but I don't know about it being a launch title.

Yes, If I have flown the f-16 before

That wouldn't be learning then would it.

Did someone know how to do it in the move? I forget. All i remember is they found a hanger, and next thing you know they are flying them like seasoned pilots.

In the book, these things were talked about. The plot you see in the movie is something like pages 1-15 and 900-1200. The majority of the book was not included in the movie, which is why the movie sucked.

I have read the book. It, like the movie, was also a steaming pile of sh!t. There is so much better out there that you could be reading instead.

It was freakin' horrible. Beyond horrible. I think I'd rather watch an all-day marathon of Gigli than BF:E again.

WHAT? You mean BF Earth was a NOVEL? Oh NOES! I thought it was the true story of how Scientology came to Earth! Dayum, there goes my religion....down the crapper...😉

You're kidding right? There's lots of great sci-fi flicks and Battlefield Earth isn't one of them. In fact, it rates highly amongst the worst films ever made in any genre.
