Yesterday while kayaking I happen to step on a sea urchin, which I must say is a very painful experience. ouch!

Well anyways, how shoudl I deal with this? Obviously I have to go to a doctor, and will do so tomm morn, but Ive been told several different things on whether or not its good to keep the spines in or not.
The lifeguard told me too leave them in there, and itll "dissolve" on my foot. Other people told me to get it out with a needle which is exactly what the lifeguard told me NOT to do. Who is right? Is it ok to leave the spines in. Theyre very deep and will be nearly impossible to take out, no to mention theyre very brittle.

From my knowledge of Microbiology, your lymphatic cells will go and try to attack the foreign bodies (the spines) and surround them. If they're fairly big, get ready for some major swelling, and sores. It'll also form lots of puss cuz they lymphatic cells will kill thsemselves trying to rid the spines.
On the other hand, you can do some serious infection and damage if you're not careful with that needle.

well actually there was major swelling yesterday but when I woke up this morning the swelling was nearly gone. It doenst really hurt unless I step on it.

<< so your sitting there typing with sea urchin limbs sticking ot of your foot? >>

theyre not sticking out, but theyre in my foot. Theyre very brittle and the ends I swabbed off with a gauze. I can see the spines right beneath the surface of my foot.

The lifeguard is giving good advice.

As painful as it is, you should attempt to break up the spines by manipulating or walking on your foot. Once they are broken up, they will dissolve that much faster.

Another thing you could do, is apply some Adolph's meat tenderizer to your foot. It will help break down the spines which are nearly pure protein.

On a scuba diving vacation many years ago, one of the guys on the trip put some Sea Urchin spines through his hand. He moved his hand all about and smacked it down on a tabletop several times to break the spines. He said it felt better to be able to move the hand but that it still hurt quite a bit. We were on the island of Bonaire with no Adolph's to be had. One of the leaders of the trip said that there was an alternative but that he may not want to do it. The cure was to urinate on the affected area.

After another day of pain this guy did said he was going to do it. He said he would do nearly anything to make the pain go away. It worked.

There is something in our urine that helps break down the proteins in the spines.

Seeing as how you're not on an island, I'd just go see the Doc. I'm sure there is a better alternative to urine.

I thought you are to pee on your feet. that is what I remember.. somehting with our piss having a compound to counteract the effects of sea urchins and jelly fish.

I was told that too, but it came from a very unreliable source so I didnt believe it. Well right now Im going to head to the health center and if all else fails, Ill jsut have to whip out the little guy and do the deed. Although its going to be pretty hard to aim for the bottom of my foot?
can anybody pic that scene 🙂

thanks for the help

who is it that has a sig that says "next time a forum member gets robbed they'll post here, then call the cops"? reminds me of that, of course alot of people do get robbed, and post here first, but thats in forsale trades, so it kinda don't count

It also works on Bull Nettle; nasty plant that embeds fine filaments into your skin and burns.

update:Went to the doc and all he that I can do is soak it heavily in vinegar and given enough timer theyll either dissolve or ocme out. He also gave me some antibiotics

the reason I posted here before going to doctor is because I got in late last nite and wasnt able to go to the doctor until this morning.
