I started Mass Effect

SAWYER

Lifer
I am barely into the game, I am on the first level where you find out that guy was betrayed and shot in the back. I can tell from the opening I will like this trilogy, the story seems like it has potential to be very deep and epic. The combat is janky as hell though

It took me 3 or 4 tries over a year or more to get myself to play much past that point. I just couldn't get into or or convince myself to keep playing. When I finally did I really liked the game.

I found #2 to be a big disappointment.

Story is better in part one but combat isn't that great. Combat is better in two but story lacks a little but still good. The excellent voice acting is really what helped me get immersed into the game a lot.

I loved ME1. They say ME2 is the better game and I've beaten both, but I still think ME1 left me in a greater sense of awe.

The first one really drags for the first third of the game. Once you get moving it's good, and the last third of the game is just freaking awesome and awe-inspiring. The action, the story, all top-notch.

I just wish they could re-optimize the original engine. It's really hard to play with all the frame-rate drops during combat, especially after ME2 and it's flawless performance (at least on 360).

Oh man I've played through Mass Effect 1 seven times--4 times on the PC and 3 times on the X360--and I'll probably go back one day and play it an 8th time. The only other game I've replayed more is Half-Life 2, which is a game I revisit at least once a year to keep my grounded.

I love this game. The atmosphere, the voice acting, the story (it gets goddamn EPIC), the side missions, the codex (oh man don't skip reading these because the lore is really cool), the powers, the conversation wheel (you get XP for certain rare choices unlike ME2), the score (every time I fire it up the game and it sits on the menu screen with planet Earth and the music playing, I get so excited) and the exploration of everything is all amazing! Yes a lot of the planets with side-missions look the same and the Mako can be a pain to drive because it's squirrelly as hell, but man is rad to just go out and explore.

The combat and some of the other oddities, to me, really help the game stand out. Yes the combat is a little wonky at first, especially now that the game is a few years old, but it's fine once things get rolling and you level up. Give it a few hours, unlock some powers for Shepard and you'll be fine.

What class are you playing? My recommendation is always to go with a female renegade Vanguard, and if you're not into playing an hardass then go with a Paragon. But the female voice actress is AWESOME, and the Vanguard class is a devastator at higher levels!

God. I might have to play through this again during the holidays.

You'll get used to the combat quirks, and will easily forgive the trivial imperfections of both games for what is (imo) the best sci-fi storyline in any game I've ever played.

I think I have 5-ish playthroughs on ME1, and I'm working on my 5th or 6th on ME2.
