I less than $200 each day for my 12 hour shift as a paramedic. Cry me a river for the waiters and waitresses making what they make.

No, his tip was 18%.

164 (subtotal) + 16 (tax) + 30 (tip) = 210

30/164 = ~18%

I can't believe this turned into a tip thread either and that waiters expect to make 100/hour in tips alone. It seems easier in Japan or Europe.

Tipping $60 on a $180 is retarded unless the waitress gives you a blowjob. I can understand it if it was for a group of 6 people. But 2 people? you gotta be fucking joking.

The waiters don't work any harder than a $40 bill for two people at a regular restaurant. They don't deserve 18 extra percent just because they work in an expensive restaurant.

As I already stated, in order to provide you with excellent service, a waiter at a nice restaurant will only have a few tables with a couple of seatings each night.

Stay classy ATOT.
So what special services do your waiters provide that warrant a tip commensurate with the food price?
- Offer drinks
- Keep water filled
- Recite specials
- Hand out menus
- Take order
- Bring food
- Remove dishes
- Offer dessert
- Bring check (tip for waiters: the longer it takes to get the check, the smaller the tip)
- Otherwise stays out of your face

It's the same basic stuff whether you are in a fine bistro with velvet walls or a lunch counter. The number of table per waiter only matters if the waiters are overworked. Having a waiter standing around with nothing to do in my name doesn't earn a bigger tip.

You see, here in North America it's customary to have a bunch of arbitrary rules. You're expected to tip the waitress at Red Lobster, but you're not supposed to tip the UPS guy. Tipping a maid is ok, but tipping a police officer is a federal crime. Tipping the woman who was nice enough to have sex with you is called prostitution.

The strange part about tipping culture is that the waitress at Red Lobster earns more money than a paramedic does. One of my friends is a waitress at an upper class restaurant and she earns more than I earned as a chemist.

Too lazy to read through all the posts, but since everyone on ATOT is a "mastur stayk kooker" I'm sure someone has or will spout out saying that they could grill a steak that would be 10x better than any restaurant. But they can't. They really can't.

So if you think about it, tipping means you hate America. If you saved that tip money and spent it at a place like McDonalds, it gets reported and taxed. If you tip the waitress, it doesn't get taxed at this first step, but only after she goes out and spends it somewhere, which would probably be on drugs which is another step where it isn't taxed.

With 80/person spending? 18% seems normal to average. If I had to guess, at these high-end places, the average tip is going to be lower for people who actually pay for the meal. However, it's offset by the business people who tip like crazy to impress the clients and because it's not their money anyway. That's how you get those waiters who demand and expect 1000/day in tips as mentioned above.

Regarding the conflict, there's always going to be a big divide in money with regard to employee expectations versus what people want to pay them, whether that's management or the customer. Employees want more money and the people who pay them want to save money.

For a $180 meal.. you should have tipped at least $60

And wow, if you regularly tip 35-40%+ per meal, well, good for you but I think that's above the natural average at even high-end places.

My gf and I went there for our anniversary too. Awesome steak! Lobster mash potatoes are awesome but is freaking enormous.

how the hell do those reviews keep saying "it can be cheap or expensive!" but everyone spends 200-300 PER PERSON there? I looked at the menu and it seemed that things varied from 1-10 dollars. WTF? Can someone explain to me how you hit ~300 dollars when the menu isn't that expensive? Looking at the reviews as well they didn't seem to get THAT much food. Which leads me to my roundabout point - how do they eat cheap there!
