I sold my laptop with no backup plan!

I'll make my situation as simple as possible:

What I sold

Apple Macbook Pro (best notebook I've ever had)

2.2ghz core 2 duo
2gig ram
120 hD
128 8600 GT video card

I profitted 300 dollars from selling this laptop, due to student discounts. I know great deal! So now I'm sitting on 1800 dollars but no back up plan!

Hardest part is I'm not sure what I want in a laptop. Like I said the macbook pro was the best laptop I'd ever owned (Dell E1705 was my previous one).

What I have at home:
My downstairs desktop is a gaming rig. Plays all the games I want and more (includes Crysis). Satisfy's all gaming done at home but not away

Asus EEE 2G PC. So far I've taken this on business trips just to do productivity. Take notes in meetings, access internet and email and thats it.

What I want in a laptop:

I'd like to do some sort of gaming (my previous macbook had XP on bootcamp)
Definatly Watch movies
Download tons of content
Big Bright screen for watching DVD's
Be somewhat light. Carrying a 12 pd. laptop is just silly

So thats basically it. I hope I'm not dreaming. Here is a list of what I have looked at

Dell m1730 & m1320 on Dell Outlet REFURBISHED
Apple Macbook (new revision)
Apple Macbook Air( I think their cool, and with a student discount are not as rediculously priced)
Apple Macbook Pro (new revision)
Alienware m15x (seems overpriced to me)

Feel free to put your input!

That's right Rottie, vote your conscience.

Another vote for the MacBook Pro

Why did you seel your MBP in first place? It seems the only advantage youre going to get out of a new laptop is a Penryn CPU.

I'd go for the m15x, or if you want hold out a little longer Clevo has just showcased a 15.4" case that can house an 8800m GTX as well.

After working on Compaq/HP , Dell , Sony and a plethora of laptops over the last few years as a PC tech. The only laptop I'll ever buy is an IBM. I see fewer IBM's with hardware related problems than any other laptop ( including Mac's ) . The most common problem I've seen in an IBM is the owner getting virus's due to too much porn or a failed HDD cause the lappy was dropped a few too many times. We've had 2 MBP's in here this year already with DC board problems and the last one needed a DC board and a system board.

They are big though.

Why on earth would anyone want an Emachine laptop ? Cause that's who owns/makes GayWay Pc's now. Emachine.

STEP AWAY FROM THE EMAC SIR !!!! NOW !!!!

Please do not recommend PC's if you don't know anything about them. We're trying to help this guy pick a "GOOD" laptop not a shitty Craptop.

I have been building PCs for 12 yrs so I am pretty knowledgeable about hardware. Though, I might be a little out of my milieu with regard to laptops but for bang for the buck most of the user reviews I have seen have said the gateway is decent for the money involved. Of course how well it holds up over time is another matter entirely.

Trust me, thier is a broad line between bang for the buck for the innitial purchase, and built with inferior parts that will cost you another few hundred in replacement parts within 1 to 3 years.

I've been working on these laptops for a few years now and I speak from experience. Right now we have 1 Compaq laptop, 5 dell Laptops 2 HP's and 1 Toshiba on our repair/finished racks. The toshiba was stepped and needed a new LCD plastic assembly and hinges ( the LCD mirracously survived ) but the Dell's and COmpaq/HP laptops are all in for either DC jacks, motherboards or are total losses as the price for repairs far outweighs thier value. All of those laptops came in within the last probably 2 months. Though we did have 2x IBM's in this month for hard drives but that's only cause the HDD's were getting upgraded to 160's from thier orig 40's 🙂

Ask any PC tech here that works at a buisy shop and they'll tell you to stay the hell away from Emachine/Gateway , Compaq/HP and the vats majority of DELL laptop's. Dell makes some good buiseness class laptops but thier mid-range and most of thier media laptops are crap.

If you want an investment that will retain it's value better than the above listed trouble brands go with IBM, Fujitsu, Panasonic or Toshiba or ASUS. Those companies will give you peace of mind with good performance for the price and all without having to sock money for repair costs.

TBH, in the end I'd prob actually go with an ASUS simply because they seem do do a little better in the performance arena.

If Acer has bought Gateway then Acer will make Gateway a better laptop so is Emachine.
Just like HP bought Compaq and I find Compaq notebook designs look nice.

Brand doesn't matter, ODM does...

No clue what ODM means but OSX is awesome. OP needs to buy another MBP. By the way, doesn't the profit mean some idiot paid maybe $100 less than the brand new price??

This

Light, rugged and powerful.

Pros:

* Runs much cooler at idle than previous T60
* Stronger lid construction and a bit stiffer chassis
* Lots of power for anything you can throw at it
* Still shares accessories with the T60 so less items to upgrade

My T60 is my main machine(pretty much the same thing)....had I not had a PS3 to game on I would have upgraded to a T61P a long time a go (currently price is $1,131.75). I remember when TxP laptops used to go for $2k a pop easily and no one was complaining...they got the fastest mobile processors in town and the best graphics cards for gaming and professional use.

You can load OS X on it and Windows XP , Vista and Linux.....I know there are people who quad boot such machines because they can....

ODM = Original Design Manufacturer
OEM = Original Equipment Manfacturer

If I recall correctly, Asus does both in addition to having their own retail line of products.
