well, i have my USB joystick plugged into the front USB on my case, and last night i got up from my desk and tripped over it. I thought it just unplugged it, but a few minutes later i started smelling part burning. I immediately pulled the power cord without even shutting down to get it off fast. I looked at the USB slot and it was all jacked up, i thought the smell was the metal on metal because the little plastic part got ripped out, so i put the plastic back in, just to keep metal off metal and then fired it back up with still the same smell.

Afterword, i opened the case, and disconnected the USB on the case from the mobo, and then tried again, but i still get the smell... I checked the system Temp, and nothing idles over 40 degrees, which has been where it has been for a long time, although i when i play games it gets to about 48 C which i thought was pretty high for a 3.0 GHZ C P4...This temp has steadily increased over the last 2 months but very slowly so i thought nothing of it as long as i monitor it.

I dont know what else could cause this smell, because the only thing that happened was i messed up that USB port, which no longer has power to it. The smell isnt as strong as before, but 12 hours later it is still there.

please advise, thanks

Open up the case and look for blown capacitors. Usually the tops of them would either burst or buldge.

48*C isnt high but i think you might wanna check around the case for large collections of dust, maybe on the heatsink? as you say the temp has been steadily increasing and dust could be causing this.

I used a screwdriver to fork out all the clumps of dust from my heatsink, anything will do as long as you dont poke sensitive parts like the ram or the black chips and things on the mobo. For the rest of the case use umm i cant think of anything since ive never gotten round to doing it 🙁 maybe a dry cloth would be good for the rest of the case.
