I sleep better when my computers are doing stuff..

I pretty much leave my desktop box, linux box, and htpc (in the living room) on at all times.. And, I find myself trying to give them something to do - like defragmenting, downloading, searching for spyware, etc..

I think it's a habit I developed when I used to download music while in middle and high school off a 14.4kbps and later 28.8kbps modem. I used to queue up 200mb worth of stuff and have it download all night.. until 8am where I would have to disconnect it so my mom could receive faxes.

For a while, I ran SETI.. but I quit doing that after I noticed my computer going full blast 24/7 caused it to be warmer in my room. And, there isn't a graphical linux client that I can find.

But for some reason, I just seem to feel better when my computer is doing something useful - though I get that feeling now from seeing the little red recording light on my replay tv.

Anyone else like to give their computer stuff to do while they're gone?

I set Azureus to download huge files when I'm sleeping.
Edit:
aka Debian's 7 disc set
SuSE's 5 disc set
FreeBSD
etc

It's always nice to wake up the next morning and see that all the files finished transfering.

For me, it's not so much the computer, but the TV instead. If that sucker is on, I'm *OUT COLD* nearly instantly and I purr like a kitten. :) I think it's the ambient noise that helps calm me down or something.

When I was little, my mom use to put me to sleep by vacuuming my room. She said that I would clonk right out. :p

...maybe that's why I slept so well when I had the FOP38s and my other Delta 7K RPM fans going. :D

I did get use to the sound of all the fans while punching it up for DC, but after disconnecting a few recently, I fall right out. The high pitch noise all the fans combined make was secretly responsible for alot of stress. Now I just need to find a better place to crunch. Not five feet away from were I sleep. :)

vacuums are like stabbing needles into my ears! I about go on a murderous rampage when I realize it's been on too long.

You know the feeling, the vacuum turns on... you learn to cope with the noise... and then after about 10 minutes you realize "have I been putting up with this frikken loud noise for 10 minutes... this crap has to go... now SHUT IT OFF!"

edit: oh and thanks OP for reminding me to give my comp something to do tonight. I usually forget and just go to sleep instead. But there are a few things I need to DL

make sure to abuse it right before you go on some sort of break ;) at my school when we went over the download limit we were kicked off the internet for 7 days.. but it would take a day to register that you went over.. so you can go waaay over with their super fast speeds.. do it right before winterbreak or something like that and you get kicked off when you're not there :)

I sleep better from the sound and the heat created. Extra files when I wake up is a bonus! :D

I am hoping my new x850xt videocard puts out some heat too as my room is too freakin cold, lol.

Turn off the computer and save on your electrical bill! The money you save will make you sleep better.

I actually need my computer to be folding 24/7 even when I'm using it. I recently noticed that it makes it a lot slower so I set it to just use idle cpu time. But I also can't stand not utilizing my machines, they have to be at least doing something, usually trying to save everyone from cancer.

The distributed.net client is running on mine 24/7. I have good cooling in the house but it's more useful to have the extra heat from my main box, my dual CPU server & my fileserver during this time of year ;).

Nope, I absolutely adore the sounds and high-pitch whines of fans. There's something so settling when I walk into a server room...I get an undescribable feeling where I feel somewhat connected.

There was a time back when I would sleep on the floor next to my computers. (seriously) It was pretty rad and my mom thought I was going nuts. :p I like cramped sleeping areas as I feel snug and cozy then.

Yeah, I'm a bit out there! :D

i can not stand having anything on when i sleep... the only ambient noise in my dorm room is my refrigerator and that is perfect.

You do that at my school and I'll suspend your computer priveledges for the year and it will not take me 2 days to notice. That's school policy and all students agree to it at the start of the school year.

I'm the net admin here.

EDIT: Not trying to brag considering i'm nothing compared to other members, just pointing out some schools have stricter policies.
