I should probably know this but .....

Hi all:

The message title and topic summary pretty much say it all but I'll ask anyway.

Some of you know I have been grappling with a socket 939/nForce 4 mobo decision for the last few days in a new system build for which I already have all the components except Motherboard/CPU.

Now I THOUGHT I had decided on the Athlon/"Winchester"/Socket 939/3000+ but a lot of people have been asking if I am considering the new "Venice" core Athlons just coming out, that, among other things, will offer support for Intel's SSE3 instruction set.

My question is this:

Does the mobo chip (or chipset) have to have "support" for the new "Venice" core Athlons or does one just have to have a socket 939 mobo ???

Or is it something that will be addressed by mobo makers with BIOS revisions???

I am almost certain to purchase a nFORCE4 (probably ULTRA)/socket 939 mobo rather than a VIA K8T890 chipset/socket 939.

So if I should decide now or in the future to purchase a "Venice" core Athlon will I be "good to go"with a socket 939/nForce4 (non-Ultra or Ultra) ???

Bios, AND I hear, if you rorder a motherboard/CPU combo from Monachcomputer, the apply the bios update required befor ethey ship it to you, and at no charge ! Check it out though, in case I'm wrong.

What happens if you order a MB and "Venice" CPU and don't get the latest BIOS revision? Will the board boot so you can flash the BIOS, or are you SOL?

Dunno, but I think it would boot and detect the cpu incorrectly.

Edit: As in it would work but the MB would detect it as another core.

Long time lurker/reader, but I'm wondering the same thing. I'm ordering a Venice core and want to get the MSI K8N Neo2 (have AGP 6800GT)
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130468

Any idea if this board would recongize the Venice? Or woudl require a BIOS update? I really don't want to get a board that won't be able to run the new core.

Thanks in advance.

Follow these steps:

1. Download the newest bios for the board that you are interested in and the flash utility. the bios update download

2. Create a bootable floppy or cd

3. Build the machine

4. Install the cpu and try to bootup if it isn't recognized then use the floppy you created.

5. Done.

Special Note: Some motherboards won't post without a CPU they can recognize while others will just run at a slow default.

Best to contact your motherboard maker { which ever your interested in buying } to find out what will happen if you install Venice on a mobo that has an older bios.

This has been asked many times (by me too 😛) and the only way to be absolutely sure is to contact the mobo manufacturer directly. Just send them an email, they are usually very friendly and quick.
