I should have just ordered the friggin' CD on ebay...

Trying to get service manuals for my car, discovered Subaru has them available for download.

http://techinfo.subaru.com/

Great, right? $35 for three days of access, more than enough time to get everything for my car. There are people on ebay with CDs for <$10 but I'd rather get it through proper channels & get exactly what I want (rather than search for someone with a 1995 Impreza CD).

Paid for my subscription, & am methodically downloading & naming all the PDF's into a folder structure matching theirs. First section is all supplementary info, mostly crap. I have a grand total of 2.82 MB downloaded & I get this:

Subaru is proud to provide you with premium levels of service information at reasonable costs. In order to maintain this balance, it has become necessary for us to limit the number of PDFs that any single user can access at one time. To meet this goal, we would request that you access no more than 20 PDF documents within a one hour period.

At this time, your account has exceeded the PDF access limit. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

20 PDFs an hour & there appear to be several hundred. I'll be lucky to get everything in three days. $35 + 20 hours of my time I might as well have ordered the printed copy for $200.

Fvck you Subaru.

guess you should have read the eula this time 😉

There is no mention of the limit in the terms & conditions, the only place it's mentioned outside of the actual incident generated warning page is in the FAQ.

I wonder what would happen if you just used transport pro to dwonload the entire site at once. There is probably a lag time from when you open a file to when it records you opened it. So download with 800 threads, and restart it every hour 😛

Not sure exactly what your point is. Real service manuals are quite expensive ($200, and I was surprised it was that little) plus you can't print out the page you want, get it dirty, & toss it when you're done.

Well, shouldn't the dealership have both the hardcopy and PDF copy?

well...they did mention it...not like they just left you to figure it out after you paid them...like someone else said...use an app to rip the files and have it restart every hour, thats about all i can think of...

How does it record? Via IP, account, or cookies? If it's IP or cookies, you could easily have a few other members access the site and start in different areas.

Probably records due to usernames.

I would assume it's by login credentials.

I'm trying to figure out a way to automate it.

The link structure is something like this:

http://techinfo.subaru.com/html/downloadPdf.jsp?doc_id=19193
...
http://techinfo.subaru.com/html/downloadPdf.jsp?doc_id=19218

That's one section, the documents returned are PDF's named:

MSA5TCD95I19193.pdf
...
MSA5TCD95I19218.pdf

That's one section, there is a limited enough number of sections that I could get the start/end links for each one without too much difficulty. Since they aren't named very nicely I'd have to go back later & rename them with more friendly names but that's (relatively) OK. I can get that info without a login, so I can do that any time.

If I can find a download program that can handle the links (one I've tried so far doesn't like the URL's) and has a throttle of some sort (1 every 4 minutes should keep me out of trouble) it would work.

Just last year, NASIOCs/edmunds townhall people were downloading the entire manual prior to the restriction, and some were reselling. So Subaru restricted it. Its old news now.

In any event, most of the pdfs were readily downloadable via some of the sooby mod sites.

It took me quite a bit of searching on Nasioc to even find the link, I didn't see any mention of a 20 file per hour restriction.

Forgive me for being a newbie to the NASIOC forums.

I have a grand total of one post, which has thus far gone unanswered.

Although all information on this site is available to you when you purchase a subscription, users are limited to access a maximum of 20 PDFs per hour. This will assist Subaru in keeping subscription rates from increasing, as well as allowing better service levels for all users. If a subscribed user attempts to access more than 20 PDFs in one hour, they will be taken to a warning page and will be prohibited from accessing any additional PDFs until the start of the current hour has expired. Browsing and searching on the site may be performed at any time.

😛

haha. 😉
