I see Dell swapped their middle video card:

Should I be pissed? I upgraded my video card to the "middle line" card they offered when I purchased a month ago - it was the Radeon X800 SE. I just checked the website and see Dell is now offering the Nvidia 6800 for their middle line card.

I agree. However, since you've already made the plunge, don't be pissed. It's done, it's a sunk cost now. Besides, that kind of stuff happens all of the time in the computer hardware industry. It's unavoidable.

Oh... I'm not pissed about that. I've been building computers for the past 5 years now, so I made an informed decision. I don't think I could have gotten as much computer etc for my money as I did: Dell Dim 8400, P4 HT 3.2 Ghz, 1 Gb DDR2 533 mhz, 160 Gb SATA HD, 16X DVD-RW, Radeon X800 SE and a 19-inch FP monitor all for $1048 shipped. I don't really regret that. Frankly, if the X800 SE runs a bit faster than the Radeon 9800XT, I should be in great shape, especially since I'm only a casual gamer.

Benchies?

What you mean by blow out of the water is that the 6800 is 5-10 fps faster than the X800SE... I wonder if Dell would be willing to do a swap if the price is the same when upgrading... it looks to be in the ballpark.

If your purchase is past 21 days, then Dell won't swap anything. You have to report any discrepancies/upgrades/returns within the return period. However, if you speak with customer service, you might be able to get some sort of consideration, depending on the rep.

that's a nice swap for dell, as that 6800 will blow that x800se out of the water any day of the week.

Based on what? I've never seent he X800 Se benched, have you?

That is what I figured. I can always call and see if I get lucky. If not, a card which is slightly faster than a Radeon 9800XT should be ok for me since I play very little 3D FPS games. I just figured hey, the better I get, the longer it will last in the future as games get more demanding.

Todd, if somebody said a 6800 wipes the floor with a 9200SE, you'd dispute that as well.
After all, what is an X800SE but a slightly o/c'd 9800XT. 8 pipes/256bit. Whats half of an R420 core?
R360!!!! bingo. I don't care if there are 8 sleeping or laser cut pipes or not.

Dells make good machines, nothing to be pissed about. I got Alienware second time around because it seems hell froze over... it was cheaper than a Dell.

If I had never seen a benchmark on a video card, I'd hesitate to say things like "whipes the floor". I originally thought the X800 SE was 12 pipelines, I thought the X700 series was 8. I'd hardly compare a 9200SE to a X800SE. From what I have found about the X800SE since then, I'd say the 6800 is a clear upgrade.

My apologies then. The X800SE uses the R420 core but has 1/2 of the pipes laser cut or permanently disabled. Supposedly they are the bottom of the yield chain for successful 16 or 12 pipes. This is only what I have heard.

Read here. I will look for other comments on the card for you.
It also seems as though the X800SE enjoys DDR memory. Not GDDR3. So it is extremely similar to a 9800XT. Just a smidge higher on the clocks.

Ya, sounds like an overclocked 9800 XT. They should never have called an X800.

Yah, it kinda deceives the consumer, but what else is new with these graphics chip makers these days.

Thanks guys,

Seeing as it has been over 6 weeks, Dell probably wouldn't swap cards. But if the 800SE is a bit faster than the 9800XT, it should be plenty good for me since I'm only a light gamer. I don't play much 3D FPS games but when I do, I like good performance.

I have, it's faster than an X800Pro

The X800SE is an X800Pro with 4 more pixel pipelines disabled and clocked 50/100 slower. Where did you see it performing better?

lol

Dell's tech support is horrible too, so good luck with that. That card is a POS and you know it. Admit it and move on.

It's an X800 (R420) core, where's the deception? The X300s and X600s are somewhat deceptively named, seeing as they're just 9600 cores tweaked for PCIe and (in one case) 110nm, but the X800SE uses the same core as its big brothers.

hmm, i thought the stock 6800 card was just 8 pipes as well with 128Mb DDR RAM.....which makes it more or less similar to the X800SE.......i figure Dell realised they shot themselves in the foot by just offering ATi cards for a while and now want to appease the mob.....lol

Edit: just checked the UK Dell website, they still only have the Dell GTO there.....which is basically a GT but with 4 pipes locked off and one VS locked off.......if u got it a while ago it might unlock like mine has, if u got it more recently then u cant. but u should still be able to OC the core/memory without a problem. Altho on some of the Dell setups, it does say just 6800, but i think its a misprint and they forgot the GTO part by accident...
