I see all these threads lauding the A70, but why?

Before you guys set me afire, it's like I see the pics people post that have been taken with the A70, but they're not sharp at all. What gives?

I never said there was better, I just didn't know why people considered them to be good.

Hell, if you know, please let me know!

It's all about price/performance. I <3 my A70 mainly because I paid beans for it. :p

Oh, it takes really sharp pictures. The pics I put up were taken the day I got the cam. Since then I've gotten a lot better at it, learning the manual features, checking the effects of flash vs. no flash + long exposure, etc. Most of the pics I posted were taken by hand, not tripod, with a relatively long exposure, causing blur.

I still need to convince my mom to buy it for my dad's birthday. Anyone know how bad the red-eye on the camera is? Can I got local photoshops and drop the CF Card off and tell them to print so and so at this size?

Red eye is pretty bad, but all consumer cameras have issues with redeye. You can always photoshop it out, or just buy a new flash to fix it. Most photoshops nowadays handle digital printing fine. If there is none local to you, there are plenty on the world wide interweb.

lol, your whole argument is the exact opposite of what digital photography goes for. Everything is relative to price. The sony 717 and the canon g3 take some fvcking nice shots, but if you put them up against a d60 slr digital, you would think the g3 takes crapy pics compare to the d60...

so for the price, the a70 is a nice camera. You can bring this to anything....

its good...for that price.

in this price range, *every* camera has at least one flaw.

The A70 (the canons in general) are known to produce 'softer' image.

After a lot of research i chose a Digital Elph S230 (over the A70), and i absolutely luv it :)

Besides, the S230 came with a charger and a battery. The A70 may be cheaper, but what gives if you have to buy some extra NiMhs and a charger which is included with the Elphs already ? :) Otherwise the Elphs and the A70 are pretty much the same regarding picture quality.

Oh, and why do people say 'the A70 is good' ?

Because it has a lot of features. BUT..i think it's a paradoxon to want to get a point and shoot camera, and the same time wanting to have as good as everything manually controllable like a Pro :) The many features dont make the optics/lenses of a typical $300/$400 point and shoot on par with a $3000 digital SLR.
Short: Many features, but optics are rather 'average'. All the review sites seem to focus on the features, therefore 'recommending' the cam.

I'd just look what you want for yourself in a cam. Features, size etc. ??? But dont expect too much from a point&shoot cam in terms of 100% image quality in *all* situations. You wont get it - but you can always get some good compromise cameras, eg. canon A60/A70/Elphs etc..

Nikon 3100 ?

Your question is flawed - there will always be a cam which shines in one field and lacks in another. For the Nikon - it does excellent pictures in day light - but rather bad ones at night compared to the Canons. The Canons on th other hand are known for some softness issues etc. But overall, i think i agree that the Canons are top of the line.
