I screwed things up at work... :( Really pissed a co-worker off)

Hey AT...

Just another one of those.. "gee, i screwed things up at work, and i wonder if i'll get the boot" thread. It might be a tad big long, just so i can provide info.

So, I work for offshore on a drill ship in the gulf of mexico. Been at the job for a bout 18 months know. Not a bad gig at all being its my first 'professional job' since i graduated college ( Cmputer Engr Degree). Although, i've been working for my company ( just for the record: I"m not really good friend with dick cheney) for about 18 months. I have just been recently "assigned" to work at this rig ( or customer's site) very recently. I bounce around from rig to rig before getting stuck on this drill ship. Drill ships are one of the nicest places to work when compared to other rigs... Better rooms and usually a better food selection than normal Semi-submersibles.

The gist of it is I work nights out here, and I work with a fellow co-work who is my supervisor. She and I hired on with the company together, at the same time. I was friends with her out side of work b/c when we hired on, we didn't know any body really in the town that we living in. In fact there were was a group of new hires that i hung out with since we were all knew to the company and didn't know people inthe town we were living in.

Just to make it a note, i try to not to work with people I conider friends outside of work. Ie you got "work friends" and then you have fellow co-workers where you will go to their place to chill out, drink with etc. So far I've been lucky.

So, I get out to the rig, doing a new job position. No reall formal training; its doing a lot of daily paperwork and jazz. I managed it ok.. I made a few screw ups here and there. Some were big and some where not. Most of it was contributed to being new to the job. Plus, I was told conflicting things sometimes about what I had to to, or I should go about doing stuff. Another thing was figured out what the customer needed to know and how they wanted to know certian things. Things you pick by dooing the job and talk with your supervisors and the customer rep that you interact with. I did those things, maybe not tot he best degree, but i tried with what i got.. And what I've learned from working with other crews on different rigs ( although, some of what those guys taught me was in conflict with they way things are done on this job).

i some how screwed things up with my friend who is my supervisor out here. I lot of it comes down to my attitude towards my work and her I guess. I mean yea, i got a little sassy every now and then, but workign with day crew ( I work 12 to 12, the other crew poeople i worked with did 6-6 shifts) we all busted on each other in some way, pretty benign, stuff. Well, I guess i screwed it up big time... and she will talk to the office, our 2 managers and our managers'boss, about me.

So, I guess, I wonder if I'll get fired or something or get assigned to another rig, or worse. IShe won't work with me again, and we are not friends anymore. I guess my work personalty and my non-work persona are differnt. I really should have started job hunting like 6 monthes again, but work started getting a litte better; and things training wise and advancement wise was looking good. Thats why I stuck it out.

So, ATOT, my question to you really is ( other than what do you think my fate will be): Do you you my friend who i pissed off, and burned bridges with, among other things, will give me back the 3 DVDs that I lent her a few months ago in a timely manner?

🙁

cliffs
i hit on my supervisor, now she hates me. she went to the boss. atot, will I get fired? will I get my dvd's back? who will I snorgle with now?

See, I was attempting to be funny to the rest of the ATOT community.
Remeber that THread with the Nate the snake( or something like that ) and that punch line, better nate than lever... eh???

Well the DVDs were suppose to add some comic relief to the question about my fate at work...

That and said person is not speaking to me. I apologize do her about being a dick and stuff. Not trying to undermine her authority, and most importantly I wasn't trying to do stuff to get her in trouble, but any screw ups i make, she gets all the shit for it, if it happened on her shift of work. I didn't know I was making things harder for her, and getting her in unitentional trouble.

EDIT:
Also, she said I had a chip on my shoulder about the working and being know it all i guess when it comes to somethings at work. There are a bunch of things i don't know that much about, but when I've worked with other people they teach / tell me one thing, and when i get to this job, they teach / tell me something that goes back tot he opposite of what iw as told. So, I don't take it blindly when I'm told to do somthing the complete oppposite of what more than one person taught me. I like to know why, other than "thats what I told you to do." That shit don't cut it with me. I need to know why so I don't make the same mistake on another job or so i can explain it the "right" way to the next person. Talking back to her when tells me to do stuff. I think some of that is how she says things to me. I think talking about her behind her back to the lead supervisor out here.

i think that covers some of the things i allegedly did.
EDIT

I wanted to talk with her about trying to work things out since we have a few more shift to work together, and she does not want to speak with me any more nor see me. So, I guess when it comes to my DVDs, i was just a little worried since i didn't think now woudld be the good time to ask her.

As to Pics.. NO. that would really get in even more trouble... thanks ATOT....

DVDS were Lucky # Slevin, Million Dollar Baby, and I think Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang.

Dude, please use spell check. It's like reading the ramblings of a 4 year old. I didn't think adults, much less college graduates, could write so poorly

I take it that at the college you graduated from you didn't have to take any English/writing classes?

#1...LOL...nice Fullmetal Chocobo

#2...so you are saying that you pissed her off by being a smart ass? Is that what I am getting here?

and now she is going to "tell on you"....and I getting this right?

Ok first get a grip...you are going into panic mode here. They are not going to fire you over being a smart ass...now if it's sexual harassment maybe...but even then it's a stretch if this is your first offense considering your work environment.

How much value do you add to the company? can you be easily replaced?

Lets face it she is working in an environment that is mostly men if she can't take some shit now and again she has no place in that environment...period.

I am willing to be that's what the people in the office will think to.

Sure they'll listen to her and act like they are going to take it serious, but the truth is as soon as she walks out that door they'll be shaking their heads calling her a cry bitch and realize that she is going to be more problems than she is worth.

If she is going to bitch every time someone hurts her feelings she is not worth having and they won't want to deal with her so they will start the process of transferring her or firing her is my bet.

Don't ever say anything like this too her......let her hang herself.

If they call you in, act all apologetic and tell them you will try to be more conscientious from now on and when you go back to work with her be as sterile and as plain as you can be....discuss nothing but work....give her the silent treatment right back.

She will do this again either with you or someone else....not a good place to make enemies is it?

If I was working with this person I would make it my goal to make her work environment so bland and uncomfortable that she resigns on her own.

That's pretty much correct. I did graduate with an engineering degree. and the most writing intensive classes I took where , programming related. and Possibly my history classes becuase the professors liked to use short answer questions on their exams, and prepared essays for their finals. I did test out of english writing classes from SAT scores.

Yes, given the chance, I could probably write an essay good enough for say the local paper to publish, not for the Wall Street Journal. I'm not a writing / english wiz. I don't have a strong english lit / classics background.

Sorry if its crappy spelling, grammer, etc. Working in the oil field is not like working at a regular office job when it comes to grammer and writing.. or even using complete thoughts. I am sorry for the boat load of dependent clauses in my previous posts. I do blame some of this no my keyboard being crappy, and the fact that i've been getting maybe 4-6 hrs of sleep a night for the last 8 days.

Also, I guess i'm still a little uneasy on how things are going to pan out with regards to work. My nerves are a little worked up.

Cut me slack ATOT. Its not often I ask for help from you yinzers.

I run construction equipment with only an AA and I write better than that.
You admitted that your request for help was written as a joke, as in better nate than lever.
Now you want us to cut you some slack? How are we to take you seriously?

No kidding. I'm trying to decipher this mess and I'm going "College? Really?"

I don't like you. I read that whole thing and YOU DIDN'T TELL US WHAT YOU ACTUALLY DID TO HER. The most important part of the story and you left it out. Worthless...

THIS!

To all:

Well, I'm not really sure what I did. Probably did a little back talking, but nothing sexual/ racial/ sexist, etc. My banter / attitude could have been seen as insubordination towards her from an outside observer, though. It was not any one overt act that got me trouble. It could have been just the way i acted towards her while working, but I'm not sure. Nothing was said to me about my attitude or behavior in the time leading up to this moment from her or the other personnel out here.

Wheezer:
I think I was being a smart ass and then pushing it a little too far. Sometimes you don't know when enough is enough. That could have been it.

In terms of value to the company... its a fairly entry level position. As of right now, from what I understand, we don't have enough personel to adequately work all the jobs we have running right now. I mean... most of our jobs usually have guys working 2 -3 weeks a month offshore. When we had more people, and less jobs running, we had a bunch of crews working equal time schedule, 2 weeks & 2 weeks off. Now we are phasing those crews to 2 weeks on, 1 week off. We also started pulling in people from outside companies and even form other service lines from within to meet some of our staffing needs.

I understand about being apologetic, and all that good jazz. I was planning on it to begin with. I do feel bad for letting it get this far. I just don't want to be sent to another rig. Knowing my luck, it will not be as nice as this, nor will I receive the same daily day rate that I would receive at my current posting because I could possibly be working a job at a lower day rate just b/c of contracts, or personnel needs.

With regards to the sexual harassment comment... Who knows what their ( my office) response will be if she frames it as such.

I see my options as: I just never work with her again on that rig; I get sent to another rig to work with their crew; I will be unassigned to a crew and bounce around as needed; or she gets transfered to another rig and I stay on that rig,; I get released / quit from the company before I can transfer to another division; I successfully transfer to another division.

Fullmetal Chocobo:
What game should I offer her? My n64 collection is maybe 10-12 games strong. I really don't want to part with any of them.

oldsmoboat:

I wanted advice and opinions on what you guys thought. The DVDs were the wild card... I was trying to use the DVDs as the as the parallel to the "better nate then lever". I still LOL when I think about that thread.
Back on topic.. I also required counsel on the best approach to ask for said DVDs.

Tough crowd this morning... must really be a slow Sunday to have so many people reading and mocking my poor spelling, grammer and story telling abilities.
