I scratched my heatsink! help.

i tried to get the old pad of my sk6 with a knife. i hear that wasn't a good idea. well, i scratched the crap out of it. can i still use this sink? will paste fill in the cracks? what's the best way to get those old pads off?

thanks.x

the razor should work, if its scratched where the core contacts it, sand it off a bit with sandpaper....you might as well lap the thing all the way while you're at it...work up to 600 grit and then stop, should be pretty shiny 🙂

edit: errr i thought you said razor, yeah a knife probably would scratch it up 😛

dammit i thought i hit edit not quote...oh well you get the point

Whatever you fill the cracks with make sure it is thermo-conductive and not just glue. Radio Shack sells little tubes of silicon "heat sink grease." It's not as good as arctic silver, but it does the job. You'll want to get it all good and goopy between your HS and CPU. Air between the two (as in scratches) is your enemy.
