I saw the Queen Mary 2 departing NY harbor tonight

I've seen aricraft carriers, but for some reason this gives a larger impression. It is the largest cruise ship in the world, and it is just HUGE! They sent it off with fireworks and what not, alot of fanfare.

Yeah, there was a thread the other day with pictures of it...fvcking insane! Too bad I'll probably never see it in real life to get a good scope of it's size.

Searched for Queen, missed the thread. It's hard to believe something that big can actually float.

I was once on board of a super oil tanker - like 300.000 tons. It was just enormous, like you could host two football fields on its deck... But yes, passenger ships look better.

What are the chances of it ever coming to the west coast?

They should have NFL games on aircraft carriers.

hehe, just what i was gonna say...you go on 'em cruises, you gotta bring yer own doc nowadays 😛

I can't tell from the picture how big it actually is. You could have at least put a quarter or a pocket knife in the picture so we could get some idea of the scale.

I think that pic was taken during sea trials. see the first pic here

Wasn't Cunard the same company that made "that other big boat"

Titanic was from the White Star lines. The ship that picked up the few Titanic survivors, the Carpathia, was a Cunard liner.

Yes, they merged in 1934. Titanic sank in 1912 I believe, when they were still a seperate company.

Seems strange that they would have 2 different types of engines, diesel and gas turbine.

Good read on why they went Gas/diesel,

The gas turbines were to take some of the load off of the diesels while in Alaskan waters. Because diesels in full load produced visible smoke and if a cruise ship produces visible smoke in Alaskan waters they are fined. However a new form of diesel engines has made it so there is no visible smoke under load. Thus the gas turbine and diesel combinations are no longer needed.
