Take a breath before you start laughing...

Anyways I visited one of my friends who has commited himself to maintaining barn-type animals. After showing me his horses I saw his collection of cocks and but what stood out was a particularly large one that must've been 2 feet tall and seemed unusually muscular compared to the flock. I asked jokingly asked if he used it to cock fight, and he said no with smile and gleam in his eye. He later admitted that he used it to skirmish with some other friends of his, but that they didn't fight them to the death.

to what extent is cock fighting illegal?

Can't think of anything funny to say.....so:

California Update: Cockfighting Penalties Increased

On September 2, Governor Gray Davis signed into law S.B. 732, a bill to increase penalties for cockfighting. Introduced by Senator Nell Soto, S.B. 732 raises the penalty for a first offense of illegal cockfighting to a fine of up to $5,000 and a second offense to a fine of up to $25,000. The law will take effect on January 1, 2004.
Cockfighting is a serious and egregious form of animal cruelty, in which roosters are bred for viciousness, drugged to heighten aggression, fitted with razor-sharp knives and gaffs on their legs, and set to hack each other to death for the amusement and illegal gambling of spectators. Even the "winners" often die from their injuries, which can include punctured lungs, broken bones, and pierced eyes.

Cockfights are also common venues for trafficking in illegal drugs and guns, and sometimes violent attacks and homicides. And cockfights have contributed to the rapid spread of Exotic Newcastle Disease, killing birds by the millions. Before the passage of S.B. 732, California law provided low penalties that amounted to little more than a cost of doing business by cockfighters. Underground, illegal cockfighting still thrives statewide, with an estimated 50,000 cockfighters in the state.

What You Can Do: Please contact Governor Gray Davis and thank him for signing S.B. 732 into law. Be sure to include your name and address. Please do not send e-mail attachments.
