I saw my first segway this morning.

So im at the light waiting for it to turn green so that i can turn into the small street that leads up to my workplace. And as im waiting I focus onto this like scooter/bicycle thing coming up the sidewalk towards me to the left of me. Im like thats weird what the heck is that.

It finally dawns on me its a segway!

I hadnt seen one before, the guy is dresses in slacks and tie with an open face motorcycle helment.

So my light turns green and i turn, and i slow down as im heading up to work, i was curious to see how it would handle crossing the street, but it doesnt it runs up the same street. Last i saw in my rear view mirror was it either pulled into one of our parking lots or the building next door.

Its a lot slower than i thought it would be...almost looked like u can walk as fast if not faster

i think there are diff. speed settings. he probably had it on the slowest so he could be safe *and* stylish at the same time, lol

You don't want to go fast when you're cruisin' for lizzadies.

Price is the problem...

For $500, some people would buy them as toys...

For $5,000, they are yuppie gadgets...

Didn't they use to say those things would be impossible to fall off of? If so then why do they recommend you wear safety equipment while riding it? 😉

trust me he didnt look stylish at all...more like an ubergeek..in a bad way.

he had dress clothes on with a helment and the thing had this white and red pouch thing up front...

hmmm now that i think about it its like having the plastic tassles on the bicycle handle bar grips when you were a kid...they were cool until your freinds saw them and made fun of you.

They are impossible to knock over, but you can fall off of them. One dude in GA or somewhere down there broke his leg when he fell off of one trying to dismount.

Price point is the issue. If I could get one for a few hundred dollars, I'd do it in a heartbeat. If I had $5000 laying around, I'd be putting it towards more useful things like a car or a house.

In case some idiot in a 6,000lb Suburban crashes into you... 😀

That's the problem, you can't really go anywhere unless there are sidewalks. You're not safe on the street, no crumple zones... 🙂

They don't have any way of making sure the rider won't ram something or cause a collision. The design makes it hard to fall off of, but some rich idiot will figure out a way....

I didn't have those on my bike....

After my drive home for lunch I'm not sure I'm safe in my Passat. An armored car running a red light and a semi making a left turn from the far right lane. Both would have been very ugly accidents. Drivers in my town are mostly idiots. I need a tank.....

At that price you can buy 2 or 3 scooters, and scooters can go a good 70/80km/h or 45-50mph. More than enough to keep up with city traffic.

they had a story on tech tv last night on how you aren't alowed to ride them on the sidewalks *in san fransico* so you have to ride them on the streets. that would be exciting.

Hey, I understand... In the gas thread, I menitioned that I'd drive a tank if the Government would let me. 😛

My Suburban is the best I can do. 😀

LOL! 😀

That of course points out the major flaw with these things.

You're buy a $5,000 bike that makes you even fatter because you don't have to peddle.

Lots of people on bikes ride on the sidewalk although they're not allowed either. Personally, I find riding on the sidewalk can be more dangerous on a bike, ESPECIALLY going the wrong way. NEVER do that! People just don't expect you coming. I'll stay on the shoulder of the road and try to take neighbourhood streets where I can, will never go on the sidewalk unless the street is too narrow or dangerous (potholes, etc).

Bikes being illegal on the sidewalk I can understand... because those can go fast and are harder to get out of the way of. A segway is more like an old lady in one of those motorized shopping carts... you can see her coming from a mile away and it takes her 30 minutes to get to you. Hopefully you're smart enough to move out of the way and don't try to pull a guard in Austin Powers move and just yell Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo *squish*
😉
