i just saw this in hidef on my new 50" with the sound cranked up. I almost **** my pants when the action started, like 20mins into the movie.
Yeah..movie had some flaws and bad acting....nevertheless i was WAY impressed.

The movie had some VERY good elements...and as one mentioned above....the fact that the monster was NOT showing in closeup all the time made it good.
SUPERB special effects...just awesome.

The first scene where the buildings exploded, stuff all flying around into the street and exploding, the jets and the shooting in the street...just...whow...

Add: Soundeffects...as said...stellar :)

A similar, maybe even better movie in that field...."War of the Worlds"..call it "cheesy" or whatever...but it certainly fits.

The amazin thing about cloverfield (and this genre)...well such a movie is CHEESY by default....well it's a frickin 50 story tall MONSTER attacking NY...so what do yo expect? :) The cool thing is rather that the movie despite the cheesy "plot" is actually good enough to keep watching...and NOT turn it off after 20mins which i'd probably do watching some other similar monster-movie

>>
It's annoying. I understand it's point, but you know where I see shaky cam? 10-20 minute home videos.
>>
you have a point. BUT you have plenty of choices since 99,99% of all other movies are done conventionally and there is certainly no lack in "non shaky" movies :) From that point of view i found it annyoing, but also refreshing, something different and not "Hollywood run off the mill #124482".

To sum it up...i would call it one of the best "bad" movies...ever...

I liked it, but the characters were too stupid and lucky. Then again, without that you'd have no movie so its a tradeoff.

characters were annoying, but with the initial story they set up, really just helped make it feel authentic.
Who is going to have a camera on them? Well, someone documenting something they felt needed to be documented. Shit happens, and they continue documenting that new event, which happens to be a crazy monster.
All of it just felt so authentic, and which, when you think about it, really explains the annoying characters. There's going to be drama at a party, between people who all like a certain person but not necessarily each other.
Hud was annoying, but we all know one of them. Hell, actually, most of us all probably know someone like each of the characters, and they might just be as annoying.

It's not a movie I can sit and watch multiple times, because after the first time, it gets kind of stale, and the whole movie is based around mystery and the authenticity of what it would be like if something of that nature happened. But once it loses the mystery, it's extremely stale, and then you start to question all of the decisions made by the characters. But in reality, watching the first time, I found myself agreeing with basically EVERYTHING they did. I felt like I was there, and that I would have done basically everything the same.

edit:
lol Just realized this was an old thread. Replied to an old post.
And discovered I've been in this thread before.

Worst ending ever...

Its like they just ran out of money and gave up.

Who the fuck survives a helicopter crash from 2000ft, especially a piece of shit plastic camera.

Also, the hot girl wouldve bled to death before even exiting the building...

It just wasnt good. You try to play the realism angle with the camera then the plot doesnt follow suit.

Edit: Oh any my final point... Daisy Cutters or Bunker Busters = end of movie.

I think I skipped a good 15 minutes of the "character" building part of the movie, and went straight to the action.

The crowbar fighting was cool, as was the scene with a ridiculous # of marines and ordnance lighting up the scene.

the shaky camera could have been one that had some form of image stabilization (like all modern camcorders) so we wouldn't all be hurling 15 minutes into the film. Instead, they made is extra shaky to be more intense and more vomit inducing.

Great movie even though most the characters were annoying, the intro was too long, etc.

The monster looked fuckin cool... would be really cool if they did a sequel, I would be all over it.

I loved the movie. Although I'm pretty sure the chopper was a few thousand feet up when the monster jumped and pulled it down. Must be Michael Jordan of the monster world....

4) the most piss poor sound effects i have ever heard in a movie, EVER. now, i'm not talking about the whole thing, just the noise the little monsters make when they chase people. seriously, i think they paid some drunk ass in an alley to put his moans on a recorder...god DAMN those noises sucked so much ass

however, it was entertaining...thats all i really care about. so for me it was, meh, downloadable. but, i can see why so many people hate it

This.

The 'rescue' scene was so unbelievably dumb/unrealistic/stupid that it ruined a large part of the movie for me, not to mention that so much of it was too predictable (oh, the monster vanished in a cloud of smoke, let's fly lower so that he can knock us down!)

It was ok for entertaining me a while, but fast forward helped a great deal, especially in the first 15-20 minutes.

Really authentic. Because if I was jumping from one buiding to one that was half fallen down... I would be filming the whole thing.

Finally someone sez this.

You got stealth bombers flyin' in that LOW!? ...you know, from when they're on the helicopter! They can spot the bombers from the helicopter, I'm like... 1 billion dollar jets flyin' in that low on a high alert situation?

They can bomb from higher altitudes, why come in that low? And why send 1 billion dollar stealths when the enemy apparently has no air support or surface to air firing?

Helicopters can fly a lot higher than what they were flyin' ..was the PILOT stupid stupid or something...? "let's fly low.. so we can get a better view..."

-everything nearly focused for the cameraman, I was like.. fake and stupid. why would the world revolve around MR. CAMERA-BOY?

Military would of forced those kids out of the medivac area once they found out the disease people had made their guts explode, probably locked 'em down and quarantined the kids.

Okay, the military would not have used rockets and machine guns alone. They have stronger weapons out there, I'm not talkin' huge nuclear weapons or anything, but hot napalm that doesn't come off of skin, huge amounts. Apache hellfire missles, which turns tanks into melted toys, the A-10 gun, simmering hot semi-triggered nuclear weapon explosives, I mean... the list is endless... They could of taken that thing down like nothin'

Worse movie ever, worse than Quarantine. At least there were more main characters in Quarantine, where as with this one, stupid bugs, big monster and a few stupid college kids running around the city thinkin' they're cool because they got a camera. Sure he wants to save his girlfriend, but don't you think the little bugs would have killed them in the tunnel already when the pathetic plot got that far?

Alien bug instincts: simple; kill other species and nothing else.

p.s. Wow...? the monster has a sense of humor, throws statue of liberty head way-far out... He can throw... and he walks around, stupidly, "rar... rar...?"

That was pretty stupid but the movie in general was not that good. It had a horrible storyline and I didn't care about the characters at all. The ending was just stupid.

waiting for the bastard to die was just not enjoyable. you just wanted them dead within the first 10 minutes.

My problem with it was it frustrated the crap out of me. Because it seemed like such a great story was laying in wait, and all we got was a small shard of the overall story. I really really want to know the rest.
