I am fine with minimalistic. The difference between the cayman and a similarly priced elise is the comfort level for me. I am fine with a sporting and responsive. I do not want to be abused for it.

When I was 20 all I cared about was speed. Now that my body is breaking down I need to be coddled.

If the elise drops to first gen Boxster money I would buy one in a heartbeat.
You brits are so lucky.

I hear that. I couldn't see me suffering in that thing for 2 hours every day commuting in rush hour San Diego trafffic. I'd want to kill myself for even considering it. I see them around here from time to time but almost nobody commutes in these cars. They are weekend track toys.

There is about a .1G skidpad difference between an Exige and an RX-8...

meh, skidpad numbers really dont mean much out on the track. dont get me wrong, i think the rx-8 is a great car, superbly well balanced, and handles excellent, but when it comes down to a lap time, the exige would absolutely rape it. if u r going for bag/buck ur best bet is a miata.

Yes, but it was the easiest spec to look up really quickly. I only meant to point out how non-comparable they are.

I thought this was the last year of the Exige/Elise in the US. I read that their exemption for not having dual-stage airbags is going to expire.

Jesus! I hate the American (or at least this forum's) Obsession with the MX-5. RX-8's are much better cars. Lotus' are much better cars. There are so many cars that are better value for money.

A local guy here with one has had some issues with a couple NA engine builds (from 2 different shops in California) so he's currently going with a internally stock 2006 2.4L Acura TSX motor with a supercharger, figuring 330-350rwhp in that little thing. D: :awe:

Jesus! The stock motor is good for 4.8 second 0-60mph blasts. It's not as though it is slow but where it excels is cornering and braking.

oh, lol. the rx-8 is a great car though. wish they were faster, its been sed a million times, they shoulda came with the speed3 motor, that woulda been cool.

theyre so cheap, lol, and they handle well, not expensive to go fast. miata's are great little track cars.

a quick craigslist (NYC) search yielded me this:
used lotus - over $30k
used miata - around $3k (newer models go around $8-15k)
used rx-8 - $8-15k

for the money you would buy a stock non modded lotus, or the money u use to buy a rx-8 and mod it (i hear its expensive to make them fast), u could build one beast MX-5, like absolute rape everything miata.

RX-8's are garbage. They consume oil like crazy, they get horrible mileage, and they are wonky looking. About the only thing they have going for them is they handle well and have excellent driving dynamics.

The Miata is good looking, have bulletproof reliability, they get decent mileage for a sporty car, and they are easy and cheap to mod. What's not to love?

I would buy a Miata over an RX-8 any day of the week. Hell, I'd probably get a Mazda Speed 3 over an RX-8.

Mine doesn't leak oil! It sucks it up like fuel, and I top off once a month, but it doesn't leak! D:

I really should have given Lotus a better look when I was shopping. I guess they can make decent daily drivers - I just wonder how they work (comfort wise) in extreme temperatures in Winter and Summer.

I bet comprehensive insurance is immense on these cars too.

Sorry, consume oil like crazy. I fixed my post.

The Elise has a Toyota powertrain so it is fairly bullet proof. As for daily driving, I wouldn't want to do 60 miles in stop and go traffic in one but for short commutes it would be fine. You can't carry much in it and it doesn't hold much fuel and they are tricky to get in and out of if you're taller than 5'9". I'm 5'11" so there really is no graceful way to get in and out of one of these cars. I had to search google to find a video just to figure out how to make it look less awkward.
