Why would someone do this? People will know, and it makes you look foolish.

As in, the German automocar?

People who will be impressed by M3 badges = not people who will know that it has the wrong body pieces, wheels...stance...engine makes the wrong noise..ect.

In some cases, though...say, a newer 335i with a sport package versus an M3...say they both have aftermarket wheels...unless I heard the motor running, it'd be pretty hard for me to tell.

Heh, that's nothin'. I knew someone back in high school who glued a Mercedes hood ornament on where the BMW propeller badge was suppose to be on his Z4. I remember being in the passenger seat with him pulling into a parking garage and the parking attendant saw it, laughed and was like "WTF?"

The E36 is the only generation where it's relatively easy to make a compelling fake at minimal cost, since the visual cues of the M3 were fairly subtle and few in number. A friend of a friend used to have an E36 convertible that I always believed WAS an M3, then at some point I learned it was a fake.

I remember some years ago seeing a guy on E90post.com who had taken a nicely-equipped 335i and replaced the hood and front fenders so that it really did look like an M3. I just don't see the point of this - I'm sure it cost him more than just trading in his car for an actual M3 of similar vintage.

There are distinct kinds of 'badge swaps.'

1) Someone wants you to think the car is something that it's not.

This is sometimes excusable with muscle cars. As long as the owner is honest and has no issue coming clean when asked. E.g. someone turns a Lemans into a GTO Judge, or a Skylark into a GSX. Often these cars are modified to perform as well as or better than what they're imitating, anyhow; and it's more about the overall 'look' (not a big Judge fan, but GSX spoiler/hood/stripes is sex).

Just, say, putting big block engine badges on a small block car makes you a tool, though. Same as slapping M3 on your BMW, GT-R on your Nissan, Z06/ZR1 on your 'vette, ect.

2) Someone just wants to be different. VW guys like to do this...put Rabbit badges on your Golf. Or Euro 'Bora' badges on your Jetta. Or...well, there are some others with name variations, but I can't remember them. I find this acceptable if not a little silly.

3) Someone is a complete retarded assclown. 'CHECK OUT MY AE86 TOYOTA SHO COROLLA TYPE R GT-R YO.'

if it's ironic, it's fine. Otherwise you'll just look like a loser.

Yep, my dad went from a '94 325is to I believe a '96 M3 - same color- it's amazing how similar the cars look.

Driving them is a whole different story- I'd get in trouble w/ the m3

I wonder who that would be. It would be interesting to hear from an M3 owner what they think of this.

She drives the old E46 M3. The E90/92/93 has a 4.0l V8 engine, makes more hp and weighs less. It is better in every way and is easily discernable from the 335i by the buldge in the hood and the exhaust tips not to mention the wonderful noises it makes.

There is an M package available from BMW on all 3 series cars but all that gets you is M badging and sport seats IIRC. It is NOT an M3.

Just like people putting Si or Type R badges on their Civics. I totally debadged my car, like it better that way.

I once saw a honda accord with all BMW badges. Was on the grill, trunk, steering wheel, wheels.

A guy with some kind of physical disability got out of the drivers seat. I don't think he could have been retarded... I mean he was driving...

Its probably as close as they will ever get to having the real thing. To me its only lame if they try to pass it off as the real thing, but I must think most of the people that do this are just having fun with their car.
