MY father told me the bird poem when I was but a wee tot. It made me laugh like a gremlin for half an hour.

Mother did not think it so funny.


Dad said he had originally written the poem in college but I think he may be fibbing.

Actually, it's a military cadence (marching song). I know the Army and Marines use it.

Well the cadence I heard in Navy boot camp was:

:music: " A little bird....
With a little bill....
Was sittin on....
My windowsill....
I lured him in.....
With a piece of bread.....
and then I smashed......
His little head!

And then I smashed his... Little head!" :music:

But we got a new captain halfway through boot camp.
Some division sang that song while marching past her office one day. She didnt like it.
No more little bird cadences. (At least while she was there.)
