Saw a guy I recognized thru work dealings looking at computers the other day and he was about to buy a computer with INTEGRATED AGP VIDEO!!!! Ugh!!!

Though i'm not proud of the recommendation I gave him, chioces were extremely limmited as were his funds. But at least I got him to buy one with an AGP card and an upgrade path.

Hopefully I can get him to buy my old video card.

Funny thing was I had received my Radeon 7500 the same day, hours before all this happened.
So suddenly, I had a spare card available. I couldn't help but think perhaps I was to sell this guy my old card in the near future, and of course as fate would have it, I mentioned I had a decent video card available.

I agree, Killrose. There's nothing worse than someone buying a new computer and only two months down the road they buy a game, but have to upgrade their video card because they are using some crappy onboard ATi/Intel junk, only to find they have no AGP slot and are left with 1 maybe 2 PCI slots available.

And the sad thing is they thought they were getting a great deal. If you're an Internet addict or do business applications, the graphics card isn't too big of problem then and the typical OEM value machine is indeed a decent deal. Generally speaking, if you have kids, they're going to get games that require 3D acceleration from a separate VGA display adapter, not onboard so be aware.

In contrast, I have just finished building a few machines using the MSI nForce motherboard with the GeForce integrated graphics and I'm very pleased with its performance. It could do smaller resolutions in the games I tested, Quake 3, CS, etc, and didn't flinch once. Since this particular motherboard has an AGP slot, the user is not limited to what selection he/she has to choose from when they want to upgrade.

Sometimes I think we figure everyone is like us and addicted to upgrading. Most of my buddies are not into gaming and just use their boxes for surfing, kids homework etc., so graphics are no biggy. By the time they get around to needing better graphics it's usually time for a whole new machine anyway so maybe on board graphics are not neccessarily such a bad thing if it saves a few bucks

Hehe, I saved my grandmother a few bucks by saving her from buying a computer without integrated graphics!

Not everyone needs the latest/greatest/fastest or even an upgrade path. Grandma is never going to play anything more demanding than Solitaire... she just wants to be able to buy books from Amazon.com and send e-mail to her friends and family. The cheapest computer you can buy these days is massive overkill for her.

I actually probably saved his life. He told me he had two boy's, and they are heavy into gamming, and as of late were constantly on his back about their old machine being such a dog.
