Some people apparently thought it was very funny. It's just shiznat, right?

Context- I'm in this course where we get to play with Legos,(don't ask) and I say to another student "Man, when I was a kid, Legos were the shiznat." The teacher looks up at me and says: "What did you say?" I reply non-chalantly; "Man, when I was a kid, Legos were the shiznat." He doesn't say anything, just gives it a half second of thought and goes back to whatever he was doing. The two other kids in the classroom (unpopular class) just kind of look at me, one kid with whom I share a mutual dislike (Sorry for all the big words folks, I just finished a lab report and I'm in 'make the teacher realize me for the genious that I am' mode.) give this odd comment which can't really be expressed as any emotion; it's all like "Oh, man. Man. Whoa. Man. Ned. Whoa, man. That's awesome. Whoa. Man." Kind of struck me as... 'mock disbelief'.

So- what exactly am I missing here? Does 'shiznat' mean more than I think it does?
