I reinstalled Windows; now my computer won't boot!

I was having some problems with missing files and dlls (after my antivirus program kept detecting viruses and deleting them). So I decided to reinstall Windows XP to recover anything that was missing and replace anything that had gone bad. I just put the CD in a said I wanted to install Windows. When the installation was almost done, the computer rebooted itself to this screen:

No matter which option I choose, it just restarts and comes up to this screen. I really need some help here!

It could be a IRQ conflict; I would try and remove all cards except the video and remove any USB stuff you might have pluged in and then re-boot. If that works then put one card back at a time, rebooting each time and let Windows find it and then install and USB stuff last.

Well the only thing I can think of now would be to leave the cards out except for your video card and re-install again. You might need bootdisks this time, you can download a bootdisk setup program for XP Home here:

HOME


WinXP pro here;

Pro

You will need to create them on the computer you are on now then install XP again from the boot disks and your CD

It's very important that I do not lose any data on my hard drive when I do this. Will anything bad happen if I try to install XP with the boot disks?

Yes!

They will reformat your harddrive and do a fresh install of the OS so all data on hard drive will be lost.

Maybe wait and see if anyone else has any suggestions for a fix before trying to re-install and if you have to re-install and need to keep your data you will probably need buy a new hard drive, install it as a primary and move your existing hard drive to secondary or slave then install XP on the new hard drive. Once your up and running you can retrieve all your data from your old drive easily.

I don't understand how this became such a disaster in the first place. All I did was try to reinstall Windows XP; this shouldn't have happened.

what I would I do is first back up your data using "Knoppix" which you can download from www.linuxiso.org then once you backup your data I would do a fresh install.

I already have Knoppix and that was my plan. Problem is, my CD and DVD burner don't work. I posted a topic about that a couple weeks ago but didn't get the problem resolved. So I have no way to back up data.

Have you tried a Safe Mode Start-up?. See you can do a restore.

 

parallel install?
just install windows again, but not to c:\windows
install to c:\PleaseWork and when finished get the data you need.
(you will have to take ownership of your old folders) and (remember to use a unique user name)
if it doesn't work, you'll probably have to remove the hdd, put in another working xp box and drag them
off that way.

Do you have another machine, that you could hook up your infected drive and just copy files over?
have you tried the different boot modes of windows?
