Yeah, the costs of a data plan have kept me from getting a smartphone. For the most part, I'm always at a computer so I've never really felt much need to get one. I wouldn't mind the convenience, but it's not worth the higher costs.

I have an old LG VX8300 and it does two things well:

Makes calls where most phones won't even attempt to get a signal.
Stays charged over a week if I use it very little.

Don't need the other $$$$$ crap.

I miss my 8300 :( After it broke my wife 'upgraded' it (still a dumb phone) and the new one is a royal POS that I can't stand.

I keep a cheap $20 phone, it's fine for me as I travel little and when a phone meets an unexpected death ( I dropped one in a cup of coffee) it's no big deal. I can easily see how convenient they are though if traveling or going out but for the most part I see tons of peeps using them to surf at work, so much so our company banned cell use except on breaks. Cheap phones also fit into a pocket a lot easier too..

I dont even socialize in the normal sense and I like smartphones.
Its not "pressure", its reality. Having the power of a computer in your pocket with wireless access to a world of information just makes a lot of sense. Its better than anything Gene Roddenberry could have come up with.

Interesting, so this is a VOIP and data program that only works over WIFI, yes?

So every human being know to me has a smartphone, I am only one left in the social and work circle who does not have one... As my contract was expiring next month I started shopping around for it and OMFG... its so damn expensive. Currently I have 2 lines on family plan and I pay $50 a month, even with 2GB per line I will have to pay $110 a month... no effing way, I can use the extra $60 for netflix, hulu, HBO and skinemax and what not... So I decided to stick to my current non-data plan, spend $300 or so buy two unlocked jailbroken smart phones slam in my T-Mobile sim and viola!!! just pretend I have data plan and nobody will know... I do not see the value of the extra $60 - 70 a month just to pull up wikipedia at lunch to corroborate my claims... or pre-order lunch, or post my bbq pictures on facebook... fvck that.
Friend of mine wouldn't let someone in his house with a smartphone, if you take a call on your cell phone, he'd probably kick you out. He has a facebook account, but his computer's in his closet, not plugged it. He checks his facebook at the local library on occasion. He does not have a cell phone.

I don't have data on my cell phone, I suppose it supports it (used to) but I don't use it. I have pay as you go cell and it's costing me $30/year, period.

I don't have a smartphone either, don't feel bad. I know fools who don't have a job and I mean haven't worked in a few years who still get a new one every time they come out. It's silly to me seeing as I have internet access at work, I have internet access at home and I have a cell phone capable of making phone calls and text messages for assistance. I don't need 24/7 connection, though I am thinking of checking this kind of stuff out http://lifehacker.com/5869666/how-to-turn-your-dumbphone-into-a-smartphone-using-nothing-but-sms

What is this "social pressure" you speak of? I don't even have a 'dumb' cell phone. Besides, I've got better things for my thumbs to do.

I've had a smartphone phone for so many years I don't know what I'd do without one. The amount of ways it comes in handy is ridiculous. Of course the price isn't cheap at $160 for three phones but I still feel I get my monies worth.

You don't need the 2GB plan, if you don't plan on streaming video/audio the base 200MB plan should be fine.

My Galaxy S2 only cost me $360 more than a dumbphone over a two year contract and the utility it provides is worth many times that. Besides smartphones are all but essential for doing business these days, when your coworkers and clients are all responding to emails in real time while you only check your email a couple of times a day from your pc it puts you at a massive disadvantage.

The last time I left my phone at home it felt like I was going through withdrawal, you don't realize how useful it is until you have to go without it.

Also make sure you download and update your apps at home on Wifi.

I only recently got my own smartphone, and I don't know how smart it really is because it's a really old blackberry (note: no apps) with no data package or wifi. I use it as a regular phone. It was my work phone and I got to keep it when I switched positions. Just had to transfer it to a personal account.

Once this phone dies, then I'll probably get an android or something, but I have a hard time justifying a data package, even though I do get 35% off due to where I work. I just don't use it enough. It's also very easy to rack up a $100,000 bill if you forget to close a polling type app, and the wifi kicks out, or something.

Not really, I have never gone over 200mb of data in the year and a half I have had a smartphone.

Plus Android 4.0 allows you to set data limits and warns you when you get close to your limit so you can't accidentally go over.

My mom works in customer service for the phone company, she has plenty of stories about customers calling with such high bills. You are paying per MB. If you do not realize how much it's costing you and start downloading lot of apps off data instead of using wifi, or you do use wifi but it kicks out and you don't notice, it accumulates fast. They do give 1 chance at waving a bill though. My mom actually got a customer that had a $150,000 bill which was waved. He was just downloading lot of apps, doing lot of internet surfing on this phone, and just never realized how expensive it gets when you go over the cap, which is ridiculously low. Really with smartphones being fairly standard now, I don't get why data plans are so expensive and so capped.

Even as a smart user, the thought of that being possible actually kind of scares me. Let's say I'm out of town or something and just decide to check facebook from bed, and fall asleep, and it stays on (auto refresh). That's going to be one hell of a nasty bill for such a easy but stupid mistake. Even worse once you get into roaming territory.

Heh, I got in on the beta, they haven't even charged me yet.

Unlimited everything for $19/month, all it does is hop on WiFi when you're able to and uses VOIP, uses Sprint when you're not around WFi.

The phone is crap, but it works.

Why would you pay per mb? A data plan with a fixed amount is a far more useful approach. It's a moot point in the US anyways since all 4 major carriers have mandatory data plans for smartphones.

The fact that some idiots managed to run up a huge bill isn't surprising when you consider how stupid the average person is.

Like I said, I have been on a 200MB/month plan for a year and a half and have never gone over. Besides getting facebook updates pushed to your phone doesn't use that much data, I have 2 email accounts, Google Voice, Google+, and my work Lync account synced with my phone and they use a trivial amount of data each month.

If you are really that paranoid just disable mobile data unless you specifically want to use it.

Why the fuck did you waste the money on buying a smart phone? I don't get it...
