I recently tried sushi--some kind with crab--and liked it

Particularly interesting because the last time I tried a California Roll (back in '01) I gagged... but now it seems my taste has shifted, I particularly enjoyed how the texture complemented the taste... so am I ready for the big-time real deal raw fish versions? I like yellowfin tuna when cooked, now I wonder how it is when it's still fresh enough to swim away 🙂

😛 but... California Roll has no similarities to raw fish sushi...

I figured as much, but I was just using that to illustrate that I couldn't even get a foot in the door sushi-wise because it just felt so disgusting in my mouth. Now for some reason it's a lot more appealing, mostly due to the same texture I resisted before. Strange, huh?

Due to popular demand, I'll google "sashimi" to see if it's in my future or not...

I had jackfish and sea urchin for the first time during my most recent visit to the sushi bar. Both quite good.

How safe is sushi these days? I keep 'forgetting' that it's raw, so obviously the risks are higher than cooked fish, but I don't recall hearing any bad stories about sushi in awhile.

it actually is quite safe, especially if you buy from a good restaraunt. Sushi/sashimi grade fish are tops. I actually heard from a dr. that it is safer to eat raw tuna than the canned kind.
Any good sushi chef will know how to properly handle and cut fish so unless you get it from a back of a truck, you will be fine!

Avoid the crap dollar sushi places and you'll be fine.

If you're not quite ready to try raw fish, there's always grilled eel (unagi). Like all things, some places do a great job making it, and some places it just tastes terrible. So make sure you eat at a restaurant that's recommended by people that enjoy eating sushi and what not.

From what I've read, is it also important to use wasabi? I read somewhere that wasabi helps kill any bacteria that may exist in the fish.

The place that I had my revelation was Sakura Tokyo in Worcester, MA, where we had a birthday party group at the bar where the chef cooks up everything in front of you, slings zucchini at you, etc. If you check out their menu, it appears that they have a decent selection, and I've heard good things from others regarding their sushi.
