I have accumulated more than two months of paid vacation time. If I have more than that by this Fall, or I lose the extra. :( I guess it's time to take a holiday.

Get out and take a vacation - you're not as critical as you think you are. ;)

Seriously tho, enjoy yourself. I've craved a good vacation for a very long time but don't get paid for days I don't work and haven't felt I could afford to for a while. I'm envious.

....so take vacation?

I'll never understand why people hoard vacation hours. My old company had a 3 year plan to cut back on the amount you can accumulate - 500 hours to 400 to 300 - by 2010, because people had so much. That's crazy....I like my job and all, but seriously...take some time off now and then.

Take it in small stints so they don't "figure out" that they can do without you. If you take a long one and they need you, they'll call you back in anyway.

Alot of people are paranoid, especially here in the US. They think if they take vacation that they won't have a job when they come back, or their boss will think they aren't the world's greatest worker that is so committed to their job that they don't need a vacation. "We need to get rid of Smith, he takes vacations. We'll find someone with no life that wants to be here every day and doesn't need to take vacations!"
Too bad it's just not true. :(

My boss quit while I was on vacation, and I kept getting business calls on my personal cell on that same vacation. On a different vacation, my boss's boss told me to board a plane and fly to Japan, leaving my wife stuck with our truck and boat nearly 500 miles from home. What's the point of taking a vacation anymore? Might as well just stay in the office.

In two months, you should at least be able to bicycle down to California.

This is why you turn your cellphone, laptop, and blackberry OFF during your vacation, otherwise it's really just working remotely.

Amen brother! That's why this weekend, I'm not taking my laptop with me to go camping and my cellphone will be turned off unless I need to use it. Some campsites have an Internet connection, and while the temptation is there to bring the laptop to do some surfing, I really just need to get back to nature as much as this city boy can.

But whats the point of having it? Its useless if you don't use it. When I was younger I use to build up massive amounts of time also, but now I have it planned down to the hour for the upcoming year. :)

My brothers company you start with 3 weeks, each additional year of service you get another week up to 8 weeks total, can accure up to 60 days and take up to 42 in a row.

You can also cash out at anytime. Days over 60 are automatically cashed during each pay cycle until the balance drops below 60 days.

Some of us work in dangerous environments and need the extra time to supplement sick leave/disability for long term recoveries.
Disability only pays .66% of your salary. I can use vacation time to make up the difference and get 100% of my salary.

We have people that do that and then get hurt/sick and have no time on the books. You can request "catastrophic" leave where people can donate time to you but we don't give to anyone any time that uses theirs all up just to use it.

Repeat after me, "Maui No Ka Oi". You can get a condo in Kihei for $99 a night and some deals at the Outrigger chain for less. Two weeks in Maui will leave you a changed man.

While that happens north of Honolua Bay, that better describes some of the women living there.

I guess that would be an exception, but how many people on AT are working in such an environment? I know I personally wouldn't want a job that is so risky that I am not able to use my vacation hours for fear of needing them in case of long term injury....I'd hope if I worked in an environment like that, my employer would be a little more generous with disability.
