The FreeBSD mach micro kernel is nice :)

Install the pro tools and you can run a UNIX box.

ibook construction isn't the best, at least not the $1K one we bought at work this year. If you've talked yourself into macland you need a p-p-p-powerbook.

Not to deny your claims but where I used to work we saw 10 to 1 more problems with the power book than with the ibook. ymmv it seems

Dave, iBook build quality is probably average (or slightly above average) across the notebook industry. Of course, I'd never buy one for myself (with the current form factory & feature set). I have an Inspiron 600M that may need to be serviced for the second time; first time Dell swapped the whole damn mobo just because Bluetooth never worked. New problem seems even worse. :(

And, initiate flame fest in 3, 2, 1...

;)

One of the second newest generation (although they had a 30 GB HD, not 28?)
Sold October 04-July 05
for $999 (without the 256 MB RAM upgrade)
The successor with 512 MB/1.33 Ghz/40 GB costs $999, too

I'd say $800-900 depending on its condition but search ebay for some real numbers.

Then wait for next years x86 Macs. Mobile laptops are never great gamers anyhow.

There's also some bundled commercial software in his list. I would just get a new 12" iBook. The extra 10 GB storage is a strong plus (even better, get the 60GB BTO option).

The $1K 12" ibook we got felt cheap, like a $499 intel laptop, nothing like the $2K Dell Latitude D-series we normally buy.

But perhaps I was just expecting too much after years of hearing how sweet mac laptops were :)

The iBook keyboard = Powerbook keyboard, regardless of size.

The only problem is you get less screen real estate and you may feel cramped, like I did when I took the mac laptops for a spin. I ended up with a 15" powerbook which I am posting from now.

If I were you I would go with a 14" iBook over a 12" PB simply because the iBook has better specs and newer hardware - it can hold more RAM and has a better video chipset. On the other hand, I don't believe the iBooks have DVI.

Oh, I skipped the software... This three products cost quite a bit.

The keyboard is standard size.

No problems with build quality here (12" iBook 800 Mhz). In my opinion the biggest critic is the screen brightness, indoor it's fine, but you're not going to use it outdoors, at least when the sun shines.
