I really suck at typing

Despite having an interest in computers and programming for a long time (over a decade) I never learned to type properly. I type about 40 words per minute with my own sort of typing style, but I've always thought I should learn to type the right way. So, I finally started trying. I suck. I just took an online typing test and scored 9 wpm (no errors, at least). I hope it doesn't take too long to get the hang of this.

I typed this post very slowly.

40 WPM isn't as slow as a lot of people want you to think it is.

I type about 60, and I am much faster than anybody I know except my exwife, who worked data entry for a while and got very good.

Wow I would've never guessed. That's kinda surprising considering you're a programmer. Give it some time though - it'll take a bit to unlearn what you've done for the past decade or more.

Edit: Just did a test at typingtest.com, 129 WPM net speed. :p

yeah it's very surprising to hear that you're into programming and you don't type "correctly". so how do you manage to type 9wpm on that online test but 40 otherwise? nervous? and typing 40wpm "incorrectly" seems like a good job to me, but then again i'll have to see how you actually type.

...btw bullhonkie...u say you typed 129wpm net speed, but i see that the top score is 121 net speed...

edit: just did the typing test, had a net speed of 93 wpm. i think i do type faster when i casually type though, as opposed to doing it for speed as that will just jinx me.

he might've typed 129, i just noticed that they only update the list twice each hour, so we'll have to see by 4am? and he'll be the top typer according to the list

I'm not sure why the top scores thing hasn't updated yet. I'm fairly certain I ticked the 'post to top scores' box after every try. I had a handful in the 100-110 range too but I don't see any of it there.

Just now I took it again after warming up my hands and I managed 138 WPM gross, 136 WPM net, with 2 errors. I could post a screenshot I took of it for skeptics, but they could just as easily accuse me of doctoring it up.

40wpm is typing incorrectly. 9wpm is typing properly.

I wonder if you have to enter your name and e-mail for it to post your score. I did at least 6 or 7 tests earlier all in the 100+ range but not a single one showed. I didn't fill in any of the text boxes for those though. For 136 I filled in my name and email and it showed up pretty quickly on the list.

Edit: 134 gross 133 net 1 error 99% accuracy with cold hands. I bet I could spam the whole list with 120+ scores if I were really bored. :p
Edit2: 136 100% on Oz again, but only 121 98% on the Strategic Alliances test. The long words in that test feel a lot less natural to type.
Edit3: 126 100% on Fishing in Finland. The Oz one is definitely easiest and most natural feeling.

I type at some 50 WPM "correctly". It wasn't such a big trouble to unlearn the "hunt and peck" typing method. It will be gone in a month if you practice the "not looking" way enough

i actually did better on the Strategic Alliances test than the other ones, i'm not sure why, maybe because i went through it once and changing to another made it all messy, so i stuck with it and my second try i got 93...

Yeah I had to fill in the name and email fields or else it wouldn't post any of the scores.

I learned to type fast by playing MUD in college for quite a few hours a day during downtime. It's the online RPG that is entirely text-based. When you type almost the same words over and over again, your brain becomes accustomed to key combinations and that's mostly where the speed comes from - because you don't have to think about it anymore.

For example, words like "creation" ... you can probably type the "tion" part of that word in milliseconds because it's so common.

learn to type without looking at the keys. it may be rough at first but its well worth it. if you can do 40 wpm pecking at the keys, you should be able to do really well the standard way

I averaged over all 4 tests 67 WPM net, it was slightly annoying because as soon as you hit the space bar, you can't go back and correct anything, I quite often when typing am already hitting the space bar by the time I've typed the previous letter, and if it's wrong I can hit the backspace and correct very quickly!

I think 65-70 WPM is my "official" average even given that.

God damn. My gross is in the mid 70s, but my net is like 39, 'cause I can't frickin' type those stupid words! Also, I type papers a lot faster than stuff like that. I can rattle off posts at like 80-90 wpm, but stupid tests mess me up.

I'm relatively quick with QWERTY, around 60-65WPM but I'm trying to switch to DVORAK which has been a tough transition.
