well I dont want to reinstall anything anymore, so when I am in windows 2000 pro
the BOOT.INI file goes like this

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft 2000 Professional" /fast detect

Now I heard you can type something in here to get 2000 pro ad 98 to dual boot, I dont want to reinstall anything, so can someone please rewrite this boot.ini file with the 98se info so it will dual boot?? thanks

Is 98 installed already? If not then you will have to reinstall one more time. If it is when did you install - if you didn't install it before w2K then see the first statement. Looking at the Boot.ini I am guessing that you installed w2k first. Let us know.

yeah i initially installed 2k first then 98
but then i formatted 2k and reinstalled still no luck. Does active partitions have anything to do with this? Also cant I just change my win2000 boot.ini file to fix it??

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Whistler Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"

This is my boot.ini, for Win98SE installed first on c: then Whistler Pro beta 1 installed on d:
In this case, note that whistler uses the WINDOWS directory, not WINNT as previously. Also, in this case, Whistler is the default OS.

Correct me if i am wrong, but I would say from your info that you are running Win2k on c: and youve formatted and reinstalled it AFTER you had previously installed win98 on d: ? So win2k is your default, and win98 isnt on it at all, right ? If thats the case, im afraid i dont know what to suggest you make it, as ive never had them set up like that. You could always backup boot.ini and have a play about with the thing :p (j/k, dont blame me if it all goes to hell :) )

EDIT: you beat me too it :)

AHH, if im right in what i said above, then i think you have also destroyed some files win98 needs to boot, so you might not be able to fix it with just the boot.ini

Anyone out there running the same setup ? or who knows what win98 needs on c: to be able to boot off another partition ? perhaps you could exchange a lst of the files in the root of c:

EDIT: What file systems are you using, whats the drive letters etc ? Fill us in.

Here is your setup

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Whistler Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"

My setup is that I installed 2k pro on the first partition then installed 98 on the 2nd
I then realized i jacked up and tried to fix it by reformatting 1s partition and reinstalling 2k

but now i just want to edit the boot.ini

So since my win98 is on the D: can i do this???

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
D:\="Microsoft Windows 98"

EDIT POINT 1: Damnit, i was just too late , but i wrote all this crap so you can laugh away at it :)

What is your file system setup ? I am not completely sure how it works having Win98 on D: as i simply have never done that, but i know that it requires some files on the c: drive regardless of its location (note, this is just as win2k also requires). So in reformatting, i beleive you have wiped out some files windows 98 needs to start anway.

I dont know if 98SE can be started from D: if c: is NTFS, i cant tell you as i dont know. If it does however, then IMHO you would be as well rearranging the partitions and resinstall with 98 on FAT32 c: and 2k on D: using whatever file system you like (thats what i do, using NTFS, works nicely).
If however, you are using both FAT32, then i think the best course of action would be to repeat the 9x install, using the same location so as to preserve all data. this will restore any files you inadvertantly deleted and should result in the system booting straight into 98, ignoring 2k. Then i would rerun the win2k install and again use the same location to preserve the setup, but just fix it. This will then allow win2k to fix itself up, and as win98 is already installed, add it to the boot menu.

i have just tried something, and got a new boot.ini if i were to set up 98 as the default:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=C:\
[operating systems]
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Whistler Professional" /fastdetect

So i believve what you would want for your setup, with 2k on c: and 98 on d: with 2k being the default would indeed be something like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft 2000 Professional" /fast detect
D:\="Microsoft Windows 98"

However, please DO NOT use this because i say so, as i am bringing this out of the top of my head. I suggest the dual installation routine i talked about above. Note that you dont have to format, just run the installations. If you are using NTFS for the primarypartition, i dont know tht you can boot win98 at all, someone else will need to step up for that one, its not somethng i have any idea about:)

Hope ive been of some help, but its 4:15am and im going to sleep. Goodnight, hope it works out, ill come see in the morning.
EDIT POINT 2: ok, so it did :)
