When im playing half-life, after a while of playing (could be two hours or 30 minutes) it locks up and i have to turn my cpu off manually. When i start it back up the screen wont turn on for at least 2-3 tries. I have the latest drivers for my graphics card. This all started to get worse today when i installed DirectX 7.0a. When I installed this the game started freezing within 30 seconds. If you have any ideas please help me out, thanks.

P.S. - I have a : P2 300, diamond monster fusion graphics card, windows 98 and the biggest urge to punch my monitor in.

The first problem may have been heat related. You may want to open the case and blow it out with some of that compressed air.

The second problem I would go into start>> run>> msconfig hit enter. in the start up uncheck everything but Sys tray and load power profile both of them. You can always add them back.

You may want to open Start>> Run>> Msinfo and check the tools tab for the direct X diagnostic tool.

I had a similar problem. My system is overclocked however. I had to bump up the voltage to get the system to run stable. It only seemed to lock up because of HL though. I would check to see if everything is cool, or as cool as it normally is.

Have you tried downloading the latest patches for HL? I remember that game was really buggy when it first came out, I couldn't even get it to network. Another thing, make sure you have a strong enough power supply. I know it sounds quirky, but if the PS is a POS, your system will be to. The PS would most likely be causing you to not have your video boot up upon boot up. More about half life though. You may want to try to uninstall it and re-install it. May help. I doubt running through msconfig would fix very much other than a few performance problems. And for goodness sakes man uninstall DirectX 7.0a. If you installed that and it caused more problems, get rid of it. I personally hate DirectX, it's nothing more than a pain in the neck (especially with WinNT machines). Anyway, good luck to ya.
