sometimes it can access the others computers and sometimes it can't and there's not a rhyme or reason as to one or the other. just a complete and utter crapshoot. wtf how is it this bad it's 2020. nothing has changed with the VM or host and now they can't see each other, worked fine yesterday.

Windows is terrible these days. I sometimes get frustrated at some stuff in Linux that should be easier, but then I try to use Windows and quickly realize it has it's annoyances too. Windows 2000 was the peak of Windows. It was pretty much the perfect OS. Then things slowly started to go downhill from there. XP was good after several service packs but even that OS had serious issues at first.

Yeah it's crazy it's still so bad after so long. I constantly have problems with it taking 30-60 sec for computers to be able to talk to each other after I first attempt to access a share.

Windows seems to work well with our simple network at work. I don't hear many complaints anyway. I also like how it automagically finds network shares. gnu/linux requires more fiddling to get it setup.

Are you sure it's Windows that is causing the issue and not something else (or a setting somewhere)? Can't say I've seen any issues outside of configuration (firewall, vlan, switch etc etc) issues but my experience tends to be GPO controlled Windows Enterprise boxes. Can't remember any issues we've had with our Win 10 testing VMs in VMware either and we re-create then explode those all the time

Edit: I do have a complication at home. My Win 10 desktop cannot access my home server and home network shares when the corporate VPN is on but that is a security restriction I have in place on my home network. It see's a non-home IP and says "Nope"

Windows 10 forgets that my wifi audio dongle for the stereo exists. If I turn the motherboard wifi adapter off and on in Device Manager then Windows can find it again. Turning wifi off and on in the system tray doesn't do it because that doesn't actually reboot the adapter. I know it's not the dongle itself because other devices can see it when Windows can't. This is the second Win 10 machine I've owned that has the same problem with losing the dongle.

This sounds like usb sleep settings to me. Might want to check all your power options and not let things go dormant when not in use.

Disks in power save mode? Power is something people seldom check but for always on devices, I turn all the power saving features off if I need it to react at a reasonable rate.

It really does suck. It never sets up a Windows share properly. Always need to edit the security tab to make it work.

Also it never works with "Administrators", I always need to add the actual users id....otherwise it just doesn't connect.

Why do you even needs Windows networking? Between thumb drives, media cards, and extremely inexpensive SSDs/extenral HDDs one can move just about anything, in duplicate form, by simply walking about the house.

The last windows update, it changed 1 share permission, left the others as they were. While figuring that out, I would randomly lose/gain connectivity. Keep in mind that I learned networking on win nt and only mess with it these days when it doesn't work. Took me a day to realize the switch was crapping out. I did have a new one on hand so that helped.

At the house, it loses my printer. Have to unplug the usb. Granted, it is a 15yo Brother that I paid $40 for, used. :)

As far as being easily able to get right into the guts of the OS and custom configure every detail no question Win2k was the best.

For being stable to the point of never even thinking about it and working with just about everything plus working with most modern tech however 7 Pro takes the prize. (RIP)

Win 10 networking IS a needlessly complex and simply doesn't work the way it should a lot of the time. The real issue with 10 however far as I'm concerned is the need MS seems to feel to push WORTHLESS and BUGGY "feature-updates' along with the critical security stuff.

I use 2 desktops and my laptop interchangeably at home all the time plus have a NAS.

Personally I find it mighty handy having mapped drives/shortcuts to each systems desktop. (It's also nice if said shortcuts don't just suddenly vanish inexplicably after a minor Windows update!)

Flash drives are great but drag & drop is better! ;)

Sorry, am I supposed to keep 70TB ( of 4K material on a thumb drive and walk it to each editing PC? Sorry, I'd rather use a 10GbE connection.

Yeah, because most people fit your need. I'm guessing 99% of the people on Anandtech don't fit this let alone the rest of the world that make up 99.99 percent of the population. Extreme, very, special case, but YEAH! :p
