I HAVE to take one of the following classes to get my Comp. Sci. degree:

Cultural Diversity
Women Cross-Culturally
Cuture and Poverty
Sexual Offenses and Offenders
Economics of Racism
Women and the Economy
Contemporary Environmental Issues
Ethnic America
Native American Experience
La Raza Studies <- WTF is that?
Women, film, and American Culture
Women's Health
Bioethics
Homosexuality
Social Problems

That's about 1/3 of them, but they're ALL like that.....

Argh, BS requirements :|

Don't you want to learn about the "Native American Experience"? J/k. Why do they make us do this? I have to take something similar. You are going to be writing f/ing programs, not social work.

At Clemson, I think we have to have like 6 hours of a humanities requirement, which it looks like those classes would fit in. We can take stuff like psychology and stuff to fill the requirement.

We have seperate requirements for that...

I forsee myself taking one of these classes the last semester before I graduate. I really don't want to take it.

I have NO IDEA why it's required.

There has to be one of them that is somewhat interesting. If not, I guess just pick one at random or something. Still stinks, though.

It's part of trying to make you a more well rounded individual. Besides, there are people that NEED to take them. For example, at my school we have to take an ethnic studies course. There were people in my class that laughed to themselves when the teacher was lecturing about lynch mobs. We watched a video on the KKK and some of the white kids laughed when some KKK speaker was making all kinds of racial slurs, etc. That's why colleges require these courses.

Try not to take the ones that are too feminist. You'll be hung out to dry and kicked in the goodboys.

It does seem a little heavy-handed, but frankly I think nearly anyone would benefit from, say, the Environmental Issues class (since, after all, we all have to live in the environment). La Raza Studies is the study of Hispanic culture, I would think.

The UC system, eh?

Take the Homosexuality class, and on the first day of class, claim that you're a right wing Neo-nazi.

Lol. When they shun you, tell them that they should be more open minded and not criticize your beliefs.

Actually, these classes sound like officially sanctioned, Politically Correct social indoctrination.

Those classes are supposed to broaden your mind young grasshopper. They are in place to force you to learn about something besides your own back yard.
Just last week, I had to take a mandatory on-site training course on the NEC 2002 Codebook taught by one Darkmoon Cliffdweller. Security dismissed his gate pass and delayed entrance to the plant because dimwitted security personnel thought it was a joke even though permission had already been granted through several levels of management.

It's never a bad thing to see the world from more than one point of view.

PS. I'm as conservative as they come; but please take any opportunity possible to gain experience or understanding where none previously existed.

those sound like rather liberal brain-washed courses of people who want everyone to be open to their ideas but are closed to others ideas.

but, you should be taking something to make yourself into a full person and a responsible citizen.

Personally I enjoyed having more than a vocational-school education -- the non-Western music, Renaissance art, early Western literature and modern poetry classes were all welcome breaks from studying AI, compilers and differential equations.

Besides, everyone should read Hobbes' "Leviathan" and the Magna Carta at least once in their life. And a little Gamelan music never hurt anyone.

This is your best chance to soak up some culture in a directed setting, when you're hopefully mature enough to appreciate it (unlike high schoolers).

And while I agree it can be dangerous for a guy to take a "wymyns studies" class, learning a bit about hispanic culture, environmental issues or bioethics could be interesting if taught well.

Well put, KMurphy.

Now this may disappoint you (as it did me when I learned it), but even techo-geeks have to interface with other people...lots of other people to really get anything useful accomplished. I'm afraid that four years of just technical classes does not completely prepare one for putting that knowledge to use. You will have to interface with people as well as computers; you better know something more about them.

I'd also suggest that you consider classes in writing/composition and business. Your skills in these areas become much more important to you after a promotion or two. :)

So Navajo indians who can't even fathom speaking English are teaching those classes? Grow up punk.

Thanks PowerEngineer.
Coincidently, I'm also a Power Engineer.
