So ya, I was on my way to the beach in Ocean City.. had just gotten off the parkway and turned down the street, speed limit was 40 mph I was doing about 41.. saw a dog dart out into the street and had no chance of stopping, but I tried.. slammed the brakes.. looked left.. no good theres a car, look right.. no good theres another car... SLAM..cuthud.. his head hit the bumper and my tire ran over him.

I stopped a little further and pulled into the Apt complex where I thought the dog came from and found two woman crying out of control and a guy running into the street to pick up the now dead dog. he walks back arms covered in blood.

Everyone was freakin out I felt really bad, nothing I could do, I helped drag the dog into their backyard, offered my phone number in case I could help them with anything. Even the owner had seen it, and said he knew there was nothing I could have done to avoid it.. he said she just ran at the door and flew across their yard and into the street and he said he saw it coming.

I still feel terrible, but what could I do? anyway,

Yeah it's a terrible feeling, my neighbor's dog ran in front of us when my brother was driving us home from school one day :(

Did that once back when I was in high school. Hit the dog in its back end, and it was paralyzed. It was late at night, I had no idea whose dog she was, so I took her to the after hours clinic. They diagnosed her and put her to sleep.
That was over 20 years ago, and I still think about her every time I drive down that road.

Dogs get hit by cars a lot more frequently than most other animals though I did run over a cat once.

I just ran over a cat on the freeway last night :(

I was doin 70 and the poor thing tried to dart across the road... almost made it. He came from the middle divide and i got him in the slow lame with my passenger side tire. It made me kinda sick thinking about it.

Don't feel too terrible about it. This is one of those things where you definitely had no control, a moment later or sooner and it would have been the other cars. If anything the owners should have been more strict with the dog. Sorry about the dog too, but like I said, it was beyond your control.

That's tough man. A couple of days ago this cat ran right under this lady's car just as I passed in the other direction. It was flopping around, and I stopped to see what I could do if anything. She came back, and I told her it was dead already, it was just reflexes. I told her it was not her fault at all, and gave her a couple of tissues and sent her on her way.

Man that sucks, but kudos to you to stop and help out the family.

My grandfather ran over his dog when he was backing out of the driveway when my mom was little. The dog was under the tire or something and he didn't hear it. It was a poodle

At least you stopped and went back.

Guy who clipped my last dog (broke his front leg, that was all thankfully) just kept going. Apparently came back later in the day when my folks were home, claimed he had to go to work and couldn't stop. Whatever :| It wasn't his fault that the dog ran in front of him, but he should have shown some compassion and at least stopped to check.

Even though it doesn't make you stop feeling like crap it's totally the owner's responsibility for this happening. I had the same thing happen once, same circumstances. I still feel like crap about it.

my aunt's multiple dogs throughout the years almost all have been hit, one or two of them a couple times. And they all survived I believe. They all have been really hardy dogs, however they are outdoor farm dogs. The area is really rural due to, well.. the area being all farms. lol
regardless, they do tend to go off and disappear, likely going off to die alone.

I've never hit a dog, but had a buddy who had a dog get hit. It was a little thing who had no chance against any vehicle, regardless of its size. It's terrible. The dog I had my whole life had frequently gotten out of the yard and even crossed a busy road once, thankfully the owners of the small diner across that road took her in and called her in and they got a hold of us through her license tags.

can you say anything more stupid?

while extremely odd, its not necessarily stupid. It's the same that we are more desensitized to human violence than animal violence, and almost always cringe when an animal is found dead through some traumatic event, but pass off almost all murders or simply strike up a conversation about them instead of being horrified.

while its something thats hard to relate to, its a weird situation. I wouldn't go as far as saying what you quoted, however. All I can say is that the dog I had, I treated like family, and we always referred to her as my furry sister. And I treated her as if she truly was. Strange? I dunno, but dogs are a big part of my life and am slightly depressed I'll never get to own a dog during my college days since I have to live in the dorms all 4 years unless I want to pay money to live off campus. I want another dog so bad. Trying to convince my parents to get another one (been hard since we put her down, and time to raise one with me at school is, well.. none), so hopefully we get one this summer. I kind of feel a little empty inside without a dog.

ummm.... no. i am not desensitized to human violence, and i find it ridiculous that anyone would wish a human dead versus an animal. this is coming from a pet owner.

im not defending the wish for a dead human versus animal, however I am simply stating a few things about animals. Also, maybe you are not but there exists the desensitization of violence due to the overwhelming coverage of it in the media. However, I should take that back a little bit in that actual events can still reach out and shock, just that fictional depictions of horrific things done to humans has a minimal impact on us, whereas anything done to animals is shocking.

My neighbors cat crawled up into the fan shroud of an old pickup I used to have. Needless to say but when I cranked the engine it wasnt pretty. I felt terrible, but what can you do.
