IRS to stop mailing out paper tax forms

The Internal Revenue Service says it will no longer mail out tax packages with forms and instructions for filing a paper return. The change comes as an increasing number of taxpayers are filing their returns electronically.
In early October, taxpayers who filed paper returns last year will instead get a postcard from the IRS with instructions on where and how to get the forms needed for filing 2010 returns. In short, the forms will be available in January from the IRS website or at select libraries and Post Offices

FYI you still need to file.

Good. By the time the forms are mailed out I've usually already filed using the forms off the IRS website.

Fuck. We need to file but they won't mail us papers to file. Then, if we don't pay their taxes, they can take all our property. Government FTL.

No...as usual, you fail to understand the simple things.

If you need papers to file, they are freely available in many locations, or by phone from the IRS, or, if you have enough "intillegence" to figure out teh intarwebs, you can even order them directly from the IRS on line...
They've just stopped mailing out the packets that they've done for decades...because so many people no longer do their taxes "the old fashioned way" with pencil and paper.

Get rid of paper and those that work in the IRS entering this stuff. Electronic filing with free option (paid by government for those below a certain income) for everyone. No need for the paper option, that I can think of, at this point. Waste.

I would settle for just getting my tax refund from this year.

Yep, still haven't got it.

Just a FYI, they are not as freely available for pickup as they have been in decades past. For the most part, libraries no longer receive them which is where many, many people have gotten them. The libraries that do get them tend to have them because they have printed a number of copies from the web.

Perhaps not as available as in past years, but from the article above:

I thought turbotax was free below a certain income and included the federal e-file? I started using it when I was a college student because it was free (still had to pay something for the state taxes if I remember right) and kept on using it when I actually had an income because I was used to it.

Printer + Internet = Tax Forms and Instructions.

Sortof. Libraries have to specifically enroll in the program. I can't recall if the libraries get to choose the number and range of forms and booklets sent.

It is actually a rather sucky situation for the libraries because they always end up having to print out a ton of forms and booklets for people at their own cost because they either did not get enough or did not get the forms needed (they normally only have a dozen or so different forms). They also have no control over the IRS randomly sending everyone to their local library for tax forms and advice. Many libraries do not participate because of the costs and staff time involved, but the IRS keeps sending people their way. So yeah, really sucks for the libraries.

Good, doing it online is so much easier anyways. We need to start acting like we live in the 21st century and not the 19th.

Sure, but until people have a right to have computer and internet access somewhere you still need the distributed paper versions.

There wasn't a modern Federal income tax in the 19th century... :p

It is as are others (Taxact, etc). I'm not sure if every form on those is free but you are correct (and I knew that) but the point is to force everyone to use them and not use the paper method at all.

All the public libraries in my area have internet-connected computers available free for public use.
