202 miles a day average, every day.

An average of 8.44 miles per hour, every hour, every day, for the last 8 months.

Good riddance.

I also experienced 4 flat tires, one car-totalling accident, one transmission failure, and about eleventy billion near death experiences.

As for the reasons for quitting.. Just wasn't worth it. I made good money on paper, but due to the nature of the job it just didn't work out that way. While I haven't had to worry about money overall, my goal was to rapidly pay down some of my credit card debt. This job has only caused me to go farther into debt. Not from CCs, but car loans. The lifestyle of being on the road so much is hard on your body, and expensive, too.

I can find something with a lower level of overall stress, lol.

I also burned through about 1632 gallons of gasoline.

You're definitely in the red when it comes to carbon offsets.

It's funny because I drove 32,375 miles in the Focus and averaged about 27MPG, thus burning about 1200 gallons.

I've driven 23,353 in the Insight since I got it, and have averaged about 54MPG, burning about 432 gallons. :Q

But you looked better doing it in the focus, which still isn't saying much. :D

True.

But I wouldn't care if I was driving a pink polka-dotted Yugo, if it got the MPG of the Insight. It did save me a lot of money in gas, although I don't think it saved me anything overall due to the transmission I had to replace. Maybe about even, actually.

I can certainly relate...for many years, I drove anywhere from 75 to 130 miles each way to get to work, then worked 10 or more hours once I got there.
For me, working (usually) 6 days per week, that's an oil change every 3 weeks, new tires at least once per year, (barring road hazard crap) and a new vehicle every 4-5 years.

At least you've moved on. My office is shutting down on July 29th, of this year. They told us about 4 1/2 months ahead of time which was nice of them, since about 500 people need to find new jobs now. But still, I'm curious how it's going to be when I go in tomorrow. All of a sudden I don't think I'll be worried about doing a bang up job, especially not since the sooner I get out the better.

I was a courier from 1985 through 1993 & averaged between 40 & 60k a year myself so I can feel your pain ... I did like 90% of my driving into NYC from Connecticut though & cleared $1000 per week after expenses which back then seemed like fantastic money.

Of course gas was a lot closer to $1 a gallon then $4 which made a huge difference! :p

Back when I did it we were paid gross 60% of invoice & supplied with a a 2-way radio & a pager by the company ... everything else was paid for by us.

Pretty much.

I was reimbursed for gas, though indirectly through tax breaks.

Did you do a tax deduction on your car and all those things that were related to your job? I thought that would've offsetted the costs associated with your job?

I hope you find something else very soon, Eli. To be honest you lasted a lot longer than I thought you would.

Did you have another job in mind before you quit? I suggest you get any job even it's crappy while you hunt for a job. Deliver pizza in the evening if you have to while looking for a job in the day. Do something, don't sit around.
