I wasnt thinking and put some arctic 3 on the whole cpu instead of just the middle it was my first time and then i realized wut i did...and was like oh shoot

i didint damage it but i still dont think this was smart....should i remove it somehow? if the answer is yes then how i dont wanna hurt my new 2600

lol why doesnt it say in the manual just to put thermal paste in the middle grrrrrrrrr

oh 1 more thing

when installing the motherboard do you put the little washers between the bronze extension screw thingies and the metal OR on top of the bronze extension screw thingies so its between the mobo and the bronze screw

how can you have 193 posts... :p

paste goes only on the metal square in the middle. seeing as you havent even got the motherboard in yet i'd say yes it would be a good idea to clean it off and redo the job. a little nail varnish remover will help wipe the paste off, make sure it has completely dried before putting fresh paste onto the cpu.

the motherboard definately does need those standoff's, but the paper/plastic washers are optional.

first of all i did boot it up with it like this and there was not a lot on it

second of all the computer hung @ bootup even when i had my xp1800 in w/ no thermal compound so i no that the chip is OK and that the motherboard i scrwed up so im returning it to newegg saying doa

so now before installing it again once i get the replacement mobo i would like the wipe the thermal compound off completely however i do not want to hurt the chip

would rubbing alchohol and an old shirt work?

nail polish remover is a no-no b/c of fragrances davegod

go to the pharmacy. get those alcohol swabs that they use on you before you get a shot (needle). use that to wipe it off. you'll use like 3-10 of these swabs depending on how much goop you put on. let the alcohol left dry. then use a lint free cloth to gently rub any residue off. the alcohol content of these swabs is generally higher percentage wise than rubbing alcohol, so using these swabs are better. they come in boxes of like 100 for a few bucks.

you can use these swabs to clean many things, but not coated surfaces like LCDs or the screens on TVs and CRTs, or glasses. alcohol is a solvent.

1 more thing--- if i booted up (only for like 1 minute thou) with this as3 on the whole thnig did i DEFINATELY ruin the chip...because according to teh diagnostic leds the chip was fine....and like i said i tried the amd 1800+ and the same thing happened

so i really dont think i hurt the chip and got lucky....

I don't think AS3 is electrically conductive, so you should be OK. But ask questions BEFORE you do things, or you'll be RMA'ing a whole buncha burnt out pieces.

ok final update---

sending the either defective or burntout (not sure which 1) back to newegg as RMA REPAIR DOA

cleaning off the chip with rubbing alchohol and lint-free cloth

when i get the new motherboard now i know exactly how to install everything now

so i guess i learned from my thankfullly non-breakful however rmaing mistakes lol

i started this off as a learnming experience and i gues i learned i was just retarted at first

as3 could be electrically conductive. here it is taken straight from artic silver's homepage.

Negligible electrical conductivity.
Arctic Silver 3 was formulated to conduct heat, not electricity. It is only electrically conductive in a thin layer under extreme compression.
(While much safer than electrically conductive silver and copper greases, Arctic Silver 3 should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. The compound is slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridged two close-proximity electrical paths.

niwi do as Mday has suggested, (great advice) I'll be looking for swabs
next time I'm in the pharmacy, for those times when the AS3 comes out
all at once. ha ha :Q We've all been there.

Don't know about testing CPU in old system, might under clock but I think
I'd wait till replacement board comes.

I didn't relize just how new this all is to you, or I would have offered this link sooner.
My advise on mounting the motherboard would be to use all copper standoffs and screws.
I've never liked the plastic ones, although they do work they are sometimes (always) a pain
in the arse if you need to pull the MB.

As far as AS3 being conductive, reading ZeroCustom's post you may have hurt the chip. Although
I doubt it. Hit next on the link above and check out CPU installation. Know I don't now about the
rest of you, but thats just to much thermal compound. How about a show of hands that have seen
(or done this using AS3).

I bought a chip used and it showed up looking almost that bad with AS3 and it worked fine, after a
thorough cleaning ofcoarse.

I have accidentally done stupid things. I have spilled AS on a cpu and ended up smearing it all over.
Including the bridges, which is a no no. Get some alcohol and Qtips. Dip Qtips in alcohol and squeeze the excess on your pants. Do this, and use as many qtips as necessary, but also use dry ones to try to remove the stuff you couldnt get off. Then let it dry. Get all the cotton threads off.
Then drop it into your MOBO and hope for the best.
