When the Voodoo2 was top dog it was a little over 200... something like that. Now if you want the best you've got to drop more than half a grand. And that AIN'T inflation, people. Maybe as the industry transitions to multicore tech, like the CPU industry is doing, we'll see more reasonable prices as there will, hopefully, be less of a push to smaller dies and rediculously fast (and EXPENSIVE) memory.

From this Anandtech article, dated August 14th, 2000:
The Cost
With very fast memory, high yield chips, and a minimum of 64MB of SDRAM on the cards, how expensive do you think the new GeForce2 Ultra will be? It?s definitely not going to be at the $400 mark the 64MB GeForce2 GTS cards began selling at, nope, you?re looking at around $500 for a GeForce2 Ultra.

Same here. Crescent13, you do know it doesn't take much to run a game at 480x480 (I believe that's the PS2's internal resolution when it isn't in HD mode) without AA, AF, and at 30 FPS right?

If we do this we can have ATI and Nvidia at our fingertips. We tell them what we will buy, not they telling us.

At ATi HQ:

"Sir we have a problem in bravo sector"

"What is going on?"

"We have a bunch of whiney teenagers who have decided to strike against our high priced cards"

"Oh...really?"

"YA RLY"

"Fvck em"

"k"

This made my day.

Seriously though, I wish more engines were as efficient as the Source engine. It's really quite amazing IMO.

At 640x480 on your 14" CRT? I'll take all the AA\AF high-res goodness I can get.

1. Organized boycotts are illegal.
2. This belongs in Video.
3. Source is definately ahead of its time.

Thats what I was thinking. It would be weird if we all started complaining about how expensive Lamborghinis are. Its not like we have to buy them. Factories do make cheaper cars.
Sports models are for folks who have the money and feel like spending to look cool.

We live in capitalism, not in communism.

Right, so because the developers of the software are not optimising their programs enough we'll punish the hardware manufactorers with a boycott. That makes sense.

If anything, you should be boycotting the games. And I'll have to remind you that you can't boycott a product you couldn't afford the product in the first place. :p I've been "boycotting" high end 3d cards since their creation! Because I don't have $500 to spend on a video card!

I also payed 200 bucks for it.
Great card and lasted a long time. 64 megs of video memory is plenty for setting up a display at any resolution.
