I hate mobile devices. I like carrying a computer in my pocket, but if I could have a desktop magically appear whenever I needed one, I wouldn't use a phone/tablet. Pretty much everything about them sucks aside from size.

I prefer my Asus touchscreen laptop to any of my mobile devices.

Different strokes for different folks, but I can sympathize with the OP -- mobile devices are typically easier to use and frequently more interesting to use thanks to the touchscreen.

It was funny to see Microsoft originally market the Surface with "it's a PC" -- as if that were a good thing. No, Microsoft, many people associate Windows PCs with complexity, viruses, work... everything bad with computing. They frequently buy mobile devices to get away from PCs, not to bring that experience with them.

They're also less capable.

I like both.

This thread is not fantastic. OP might as well have said they like turtles.

I am using both my laptop Accer and mobile device, even Samsung Galaxy tablet. All of them have their aims to use. :)

Nothing beats 2 28" monitors connected to a workstation to do real work. So, no. Wake me up when I don't need an app for every website I visit...

As far as a hobby I agree OP. The q6600 was when computers got "good enough" and boring, and the 2500k put a nail in that coffin. Desktops are stagnant unless you are into gaming GPU, all the fun is in mobile.

Someone needs a better desktop. And some rendering work on the side.

To badly chew up a food metaphor, mobile is a teasing sugary treat filled with eye candy disruptions. Desktops are the meat 'n tators that give you the fuel to endure the mobile high calorie distractions.

Or to mangle a movie metaphor. Mobile is the movie trailer, but the desktop IS the movie. It's just that, like Hollywood, many times the trailer is the best part of of the movie. ;-)

For consumption, mobile sucks for me. Even on those big-ass 'immersive' 10" tablets. Mobile is awesome tho for mobile communications. Like talking on the phone in the movie theater or texting on a boring drive...Oh, wait...

Sure I do my real work all day on a Windows desktop, because that is the only platform the software I sell works on. But that is all the more reason I love coming home to my mobile devices in my free time.

I feel the same way. I sit at a desk staring at a desktop computer for 8 hours every day, and for the longest time I would then go home...and sit at a desk and stare at a computer screen. Sitting on the couch with a tablet is so much better when I don't have to do anything important.

The idea of doing anything *real* (video editing, graphics, compositing, design work, even most real office type work: spreadsheets, graphs, anything beyond the most basic word processing, programming, etc) on most mobile devices smaller than a laptop is laughable to me.

Someday when mobile devices are truly powerful enough to dock at a desk to several full sized monitors, keyboard and all other I/O and storage options to the point I could comfortably edit a film with it, THEN I'll truly replace my desktop with a mobile device.

Until that FAR OFF day, I love my mobile devices as the best possible stand-in for when nothing else more powerful is available or convenient, and for a totally different set of tasks than a desktop or even laptop.
