I'm not addicted. The world didn't draw me in psychologically. When I first played Everquest wayy back in high school, it captured me immediately. The world was believable and you felt like you were part of it. WoW makes you feel like you are playing a game, not living in a fantasy world.

I'd like an explanation of why it has 10x as many players as Everquest ever did!

Its super easy to get into and start playing without having to learn a bunch of stuff. plus it doesnt take 40 hours a week to accomplish anything. You can be as casual or as hardcore as you want and still make progress in the game.

maybe you are just older now and its alot harder to get engrossed in the story. I don't play MMORPGs, but I know watching movies when i was younger I could get really emotionally invested in the movies, but now its alot harder. Maybe same is true for games, first time you played a MMORPG it was a cool new thing that really got your attention, but now you have just lost your imagination :(.

Having said that, all MMORPGs suck total nuts in my opinion and honestly you are better off not becoming addicted.

I probably have lost my imagination!

WoW isn't about drawing you into a game...it's more like a game that rewards you for the work you put into a character you've created. It's more about being a productive member and getting good weapons and armor for your character.

It costs $15 a month. That's less than seeing two movies. I find it strange that people complain about paying for a game that they'd spend hours and hours playing, but will have a collection of 1000 DVDs that cost $20 each.

Or go to Starbucks (or any other coffee place) 3-4 times a month.

EverQuest was a little hefty for a lot of people to enjoy, time-wise and game-wise. I don't miss things like corpse retrieval or camps that last days.

WoW is much more laid back. The game has a sense of humor with a lot of pop culture references, it's very easy to pick up and play, and it already has such a large playerbase that other players will get even more playing.

I don't think WoW is any better than say, EQ2. I'd even say that EQ2 was more fun than WoW, but since all my friends are there, that's where I am too.

WoW has a much broader appeal than EQ. It's easier, takes less time, and Blizzard has put a lot of work into making the game fun instead of frustrating.

I said it before and I'll say it again the first 20 or so lvls suck and if you play WoW by yourself it's not fun at all. Get a few friends to play this game with you and it can be a blast.

If you don't want to get into a guild all you can really do is PvP once you hit 60. I hope things change with BC next year.

Knowing it costs $15 a month is enough to keep me away.

I believe online games should be free to play and I will never pay to play a game. As in never freaking ever.

I buy the game and pay too much for a good internet connection. And some company wants an additional $15 a month???

Homey don't play dat! *bap*

I dont see the big deal with pay 15 dollars a month to play a game. Thats one cd a month, not even a new video game a month, its like 3 movie rentals a month.

I never understood the principle to not to pay for games on a monthly basis. If there were no montly payments there would be:

1. No WoW
2. Pay for content, items and what not
3. Advertisement

You still get that first month free, in which time you could play alot more than you could with most FPS. Since they usually take only 8-12 hours to finish.

When it comes to EQ vs. WoW

EQ:
-More D&D like
-Hard to get into, many things were too complicated
-More smart people playing
-Graphics sucked donkey balls even back then
-No real PvP
-Little end game content
-More of an RPG than anything else
-Took itself a bit too seriously

(/played 20 days or so on a 39 lvl Wizard)

WoW:
-Huge community
-Lots of immature people
-Graphics arent really realistic but very pleasing to look at, somehow doesnt strain your eye.
-PvP with balance issues
-Plenty of end game content

EQ wasnt a bad game but it leaning to much to the RP side for my taste. Roaming and exploring was fun but otherwise it was just too "dry".

WoW is more RPG meets FPS. Easier to get into. More mainstream which I dont mind.

EDIT: Too long...

I had the opposite experience, I couldn't get into EQ for a few weeks. When I lost my corpse I was || <- this close to quitting. I rerolled for the hell of it and never looked back; EQ1 before the planes expansion was the best online gaming ever and I sorely miss it.

WoW is just... blah 1-20. Luckily those levels go fast. 20-59, grouping in all the new and fascinating instances is a lot of fun. Too bad you only do them at most a couple times each, they're really well done. You can PvP a bit in here if you want to. 60 is for PvP, it's a lot of fun. You can raid and group as well, but the same instances over and over can get tiresome. Expansion is due out soon though, 2 months or so. It will offer a new tradeskill, a huge new landmass, two new races and a level cap of 70.

I don't watch TV (people fighting, singing off key and eating bugs = no thanks), but I do play WoW. TV costs at least 3 times as much, and can cost 10x as much or more. It offers no social interaction and no mental footwork. Your brain is less active watching TV than sleeping.

I played characters to the max levels in old-school EQ and WoW:

EverQuest was an amazing, expansive, immersive game that could keep you hooked for hours upon hours from level 1 to level 50 (and then level 60, 65, 70, 75...)

The people in EQ were awesome. You could have great philosophical discussions while you were camping whatever it was you were camping.

Not everything was obvious. It took months to learn all the little 'tricks' of the game, including how to get from A to B (no maps in the original), where the good loot was, or even where people were to buy and sell from (no bazaar in the original game.)

They eventually ruined it by giving into what the players THOUGHT they wanted. They also created a whole ton of level 60+ content that most people will never see. The game ceased to be fun a few years ago when NO ONE played levels 1 through 60 unless they were an alt of some other guy. There were no more true newbies. And the game stopped being fun. Too bad.
