Civ III is an abomination of the series IMHO. Civ 4 is tons better.

Agreed. But make sure you get the expansions, too. I think the gold (or total/complete?) version is only like 40 bucks and has Warlords and Beyond the Sword, plus the Colonization game too.

Beyond the sword really is what makes Civ4 great.

Civ4+BTS is fantastic. I wasn't much of a fan of 3.

YMMV on 5, I guess. I think it's good, though not up to 4+BTS standards yet. (I think BTS is possibly the best expansion to any game. Though Lord of Destruction for Diablo 2 makes a good case also.)

I have fond memories of civ III :) Hogging the oil and aluminium then building armor + boats then launching a massive assault on the other continent and everyone occupying it. Good fun, i could never get into civ IV though, religions wrecked it for me, you have to pick one that the other most powerful civs have otherwse they dont like you and you better hope no other religion spreads in your cities because youve got no way of outlawing it or anything. Nah it just bugged me.

Still to try civ V though so maybe ill like it better although i doubt ill like anything better than alpha centauri.

Civ 4 made me angry. I personally like 3. You really can't complain though its always fun to play some race and rule the world. :p

only thing i hate is trying to move troops while in the middle of war, slows down the adrenaline of kicking ass :/

3 sucked. Later on in the game you could eat dinner or cut the lawn while the AI moved its' infinite amount of Units.

Religions were great in Civ4. Sad they pretty much removed it from 5. There was a Civic, and a Wonder, that stopped non-state religion spread. Once you got the Free Religion civic though, it became a moot point.

Seems even numbered Civ games are better, excluding 1. 1, 2, and 4 were all fantastic. 3, not so much. Jury's still out on 5, have to see what patches and expansions do for the game first.

I got Civ4 complete during the summer sale for $10. Just started playing it yesterday, absolutely loving it. I played it briefly a year or so ago, but enjoying it much more now that I can sit down and actually play a game.

ignoring civ5, civ3 wasn't as good as the others. definetly go for civ4 complete and just play civ4 BTS (the last expansion). you should be able to get civ4 complete for around $10 during steam or d2d sales, for sure the upcoming holiday sale.

Each installment in this series has flaws of some sort. I loved Civ 3 (even more than Civ II -- BLASPHEMY!!111), but couldn't stand Civ IV despite numerous attempts to get into it. For me it was the religion mechanic. It seemed as though the focus of the game was more about establishing some religion in your Civ. YMMV.

Little bit too outdated...

Damn it, why did microsoft have to kill AoE!!!!WHY?!?!!??!?! :':)'(

Really? Other then the way resources are handled in newer RTS games, RoN holds up in game play, graphics and playability. It's really a stellar game even by today's standards.
