Isn't that every Dragon Quest? I think 4 - 9 all had large intros and the first fight was an hour into each one.

I've still been debating between PC & PS4 for this one. Plus I'm still playing through DQ7 on 3DS right now anyway. Never made it through on PS1, you want to talk about your long intros...

Alright, gameplay is fun. Good combat, and two different camera modes. Now you can move around ala Final Fantasy 12, but it doesnt really affect your actions, or the enemies.

Lots of pots to smash and items to collect, although I really get tired of hunting around for items in every town I visit.

Enemies are wonderfully animated as well as spells and abilities. Changing equipment is much easier than in previous games, as is managing items.

Starting at level 4 you get Skill Points which are used to unlock abilities on a grid, also similar to FF12. You can occasionally get skill seeds too. And stat seeds like in previous games.

Your hero is mute, but EVERYBODY else has a voice. The girlfriend is an annoying cockney/irish mix that grates on my nerves.

The world is absolutely gorgeous and you also have a telescope view even though you never pick up a telescope.

Plot is basic, it looks like the Japanese havent advanced in story telling for over 30 years.

The problem with the DQ series is that the stories are always SOOO generic and boring. These days after playing JRPG's for 30+ years I expect something that at least goes somewhere. I'll probably pick this up later but not in a hurry. I still have to play 8 lol.

Oh, theres a neat little feature. Every time you continue your game you get a "Story Thus Far" segment. And you can select it from the options menu too. Its nice to have a little recap in case you get lost after a while.

The in game tutorial also covers everything, which is an improvement over previous games.

Oh, they still have standard console saves, BUT as it turns out there are statues scattered all over the land and dungeons giving you all the options found in a church.

You can play the game with your keyboard. Shift-spring, space-jump, and ESC takes you out of the game without having to dig thru a bunch of menus.

Crafting is only done while making camp, and forging is an involved process. But if you do it correctly you can have a perfect item (+3) the first time around, which is cool.

One of the Final Fantasy 13 games did this.

Game looks interesting--I really liked DQ 9 or 10 or whatever it was on PS2, but that was a long time ago. I watched the ads on steam the other day, before seeing your thread. I didn't know this was ever going to be a thing, but there it is. I imagine it is quite massive with good cambat system, terrible story like all of the DQ games. ....maybe too cartoony for me now. Not sure. I may add this to the list and pick it up if it ever drops below $20 or $15, which I know almost never happens for Square-E

It would have been DQ8, DQ9 was on Nintendo DS, and 10 was the Japan-only MMO.

One of the complaints I read about was about the game playing it safe. Meaning that the game doesn't push the boundaries of JRPGs and feels a little too old school. Some of the things the game does simply don't feel right in a game released in 2018, not one that Square Enix was pushing as their Western RPG anyway

This is a problem...an RPG is supposed to have a good story around it for me. What happened to stories like Xenogears anyway? Too controversial? Dunderheads couldn't keep up?

There are some gems out there

A few newer ones that I thought were some of the best recent ones:

Tales of Berseria story is great, dark....and gameplay is great.

Trails of Cold Steel story is huge and deep and very complex (story wise) - There's a part 2, but I haven't got to it yet.

I think tales of berseria is a humble monthly title. I’ll have to double check but if so, I own it already.

Well now i'm tempted by this new DragonQuest game...is this some kind of sequel to the others or it's a standalone game?

Not really. If you go all the way to the end of Act 3, it's actually kind of . . . out there. Ish. Still not as convoluted as Chrono Cross or Xenogears, but still.

Things are not as they seem.

The problem with the DQ series is that the stories are always SOOO generic and boring. These days after playing JRPG's for 30+ years I expect something that at least goes somewhere. I'll probably pick this up later but not in a hurry. I still have to play 8 lol.

See above. And do play 8, it's fun.

It appears to be standalone, but then maybe it isn't. Trying not to spoil anything.

Personally I have put about 160 hours into the game. For me, it was great. I had to do some minor tweaks to an .ini file to make it work the way I wanted (a patch released recently lets you adjust some more features, meaning the hand tweaks I did are no longer necessary for a lot of stuff, like setting your maximum target framerate). It's still a little glitchy here and there. I just started a new playthrough with three of the Draconian difficulty settings (no fleeing, tough monsters, no overleveling on weak monsters) and my L key stopped working. I had that set to "move right" so . . . kind of annoying.

If anyone is playing this, let me know. I have a few pointers that might make the more-tedious parts of the game (like crafting) more palatable.
